What is XROXX?

It sounds so cliché, but XROXX is part of a dream. Scott Hanson dreamed up the idea a few years back and shared it with his good buddy P-Dot after they got back from the Warped Tour in Brew City (Milwaukee). XROXX soon went places that Scott could have only dreamed of.

After getting his good friend, Wad, involved with XROXX, the idea began to take shape. We added Will "The Hick" Tinsley in shortly thereafter and the 'original four' were in place. Will and Scott did much of the writing while Wad and P-Dot handled the web and streaming aspects. They used bandwidth resources at their school to keep expenses down and launched the site on February 14, 2002. Within six short months, XROXX became the number one punk/ska station on Shoutcast and a Top 50 station overall! We had listeners and fans from as close as Wisconsin to as far as Japan, Germany, Russia and Australia to name a few. Quite often in the wee hours of the morning, we would get German, Dutch, or Italian kids requesting local bands that we played on our station who had sent us their music. Many of these international listerners even inquired where they could buy the band's CD or when that band was coming on tour in their country. Just think about that for a second - it really is amazing. International appeal for an unsigned band.

We had to close down shop shortly thereafter because the RIAA was out to charge outrageous fees for webstations to stream their music. There were massive court battles between the RIAA and webcasters during the summer of 2002. Due to the uncertainty of web radio, we decided it was best to let XROXX go away gracefully. However, the fans and the bands kept coming, begging for more XROXX. Eventually the court battles halted with an agreement reached between webcasters and the RIAA. This, coupled with the demands from the fans and a new vision for what XROXX could be, encouraged us to bring the webstation back to life.

In addition to the original four, two other talents were added to the team, Adam and Joel. Adam was a friend from college and Joel was Scott's future brother-in-law. It was decided to get XROXX rolling, and why not? We all have the right experiences.

Scott is the former General Manager of a college web station that only streamed over the Internet. To circumvent the outrageous fees imposed by the RIAA, he rallied an entire station of 100 deejays to say "F*ck the RIAA" and play only indie music for a full year and was successful doing it. (the RIAA doesn't protect unsigned music and therefore, does not charge fees to play it) Do you know how hard it is to talk a Dean at a university into doing something like that? Scott is all about the indie bands.

P-Dot is an awesome computer programmer with a vast knowledge of programming languages and he's a fan of everything punk as well. He's also a college graduate and jobless so he needed something to do to keep him sharp.

Wad is into web design and development and is always looking to help out the indie bands. He still has a local music show at the college station where Scott was a GM at and it's now the longest running local music show in the state of Wisconsin, hitting ten years and running in January 2004. In addition, he's been an active member of the Wisconsin Area Music Industry (WAMI) for the past eight years! He also books bands at a Milwaukee club for a living.

Will is all about punk/ska music. He was part of the lifeblood at the beginning because he had contact with tons of indie punk and ska bands. He was influential in putting together a concert to raise awareness of how the RIAA was trying to screw webcasters and indie bands with their fee structure. The concert featured the likes of Straight Outta Junior High and the Vanilla Village Villains.

XROXX has evolved from what it was in 2002. In addition to just being an internet radio station, when the site is officially relaunched, XROXX will be an e-zine covering the punk/ska world and an indie music and apparel store for punk/ska bands that can't afford to sell their merch on their own website (no set-up fees here like some places). XROXX will be a nexus for the stars of the punk/ska world of today as well as a proving ground and an arena for the promotion of the music of unsigned indie bands who are the stars of tomorrow. By taking part in this effort, you will be taking your band and your music to the next level.

In short, just as you dream of the potential of your music, we have a dream of what XROXX will be and we know how to make this dream work. We are dedicated to indie music and helping bands succeed. We all have a proven track record of this and wish to continue with this dream on into the future.
