Thursday/Head Automatica/My Hostage/Armchair Patriot

Da Real Ting Cafe - Jacksonville, Florida
Friday, July 23, 2004
Downtown Jacksonville is a somewhat beautiful and complex place. Da Real Ting Cafe located in downtown Jacksonville is not so
beautiful. When waiting in the line to see Thursday, I remembered thinking that this seemed like a nice venue. Once inside, almost directly on time, my opinion changed. A nice set up of having places to sit around an open floor for moshing was clever and the best thing about it.
The first band to take the stage was a local band named Armchair Patriot. Not having much
promotion and being a mildly small band, they were well prepared and had great energy. During the beginning of one of their songs, the lead singer’s mic cut out for a while, but he continued to sing and attemped to get the crowd to sing with him. Their vocals reminded me of Story of the Year, but the music was harder. This is definitely a good band, only needing a little bit more practice.
After their set was over and the crowd of young guys calmed down, My Hostage was ready to go. They put on a decent live show, but I wasn’t able to enjoy it with guys kicking and doing what appeared as trying to start a fight with the more mainstream kids. What I could focus on of their music was good, but nothing that sounded new. The lead singer was mentioning how the venue was once
“The Old Milk Bar” and how fans would hang from the lights when a fan decided to do exactly what he was talking about, earning him a free t-shirt. He and everyone else were later on asked to not do it again. They seemed like a good band, but not one that I would check out otherwise, only because this type of music does not interest me.
After the local bands were through, Head Automatica were preparing their instruments for the next twenty minutes. It felt like forever and I began to think that I didn’t care if they played.
Once everything was ready to go and they began playing, I wished I wouldn’t have said that. The lead singer was bouncing around the stage and giving fans the attention they longed for. They were really hyper and were having a good time. Their music was an eclectic mix of rock, funk, and pop. Although I’m not a huge fan of music such as this, their presence drew me in. To me, they were all about giving fans a good time and looking cool in the process.
People were leaving and others were trying to get a chance to meet previous bands and checking out their merchandise, which meant there was a little more room in the pit. I made my way to the front just as Thursday was walking on to the stage. With fans getting a little out of hand and being away from my brother, I was terrified. When they began playing, everyone was singing along, holding their hands in the air, and having a good time. Several fans were crowd surfing and many did not land as best as wished for. Geoff was singing and holding the mic, when he decided to throw it over the
lights. He had the mic in his hand again, but the chord was still draped over the lights when he wrapped the chord around his neck and acted as if he were going to lean forward off the stage. He somehow unwrapped it from around his neck at what appeared to be the last moment and continued to sing. It was a stunt no one thought that he would pull off, but he proved us wrong. Deciding to talk to the crowd, Geoff commented on his dance moves he was about to display that were similar to Napoleon Dynamite. Once the song began, I was being shoved around with the rest of the crowd trying to get a little bit of air, missing the dance moves. Near the end, Geoff came near the crowd and did somewhat of a stage dive. Girls were all over him, including
myself, trying to touch the smallest part of his body. A few songs later, they announced it was their last song. A s much I was having fun, I was somewhat glad to be able to stand up straight and not have to hold on to a piece of wood known as a barricade that was supposed to protect us. After the song was complete, I went to find my brother. On our way out of the pit, they announced that they would come back to play a few more songs. Watching from the back of the venue, I then realized exactly how insane and dedicated Thursday fans are. The band put on a really good show and the fans were just as much a part of it as the band.
Each band drew the crowd in, even if their mic was not working at all times. It was all together a good show, despite a few arguments between fans. Thursday is a really good live band along with Head Automatica. Armchair Patriot and My Hostage were good, but with a few more shows, they will be great live bands. If you have never heard of them, you should check them out. It will not be a mistake in the end, especially since ticket prices are not expensive.
