The Early November / Count The Stars / Copeland / Hidden in Plain View
The Bottom Lounge - Chicago, IL
October 11, 2003
If you see one band this year, see Brand New; if you see two, make the second Count the Stars. So, the date is October 11th and Austin and I ventured to Chicago tonight to see a show. The lineup was relatively impressive, but the crowd was not. We waited in line behind, I swear to you, the most annoying fucking girl in the world. She tried to show off by saying that she drove all the way from Iowa to go to the show. Had it been any other show, I may have commended her, however, this act toured through Iowa, so why the fuck was she at my show. OK, enough of that.
The show was at the Bottom Lounge hidden off Belmont. This area of town is plagued with poor people and we got wicked lost. We parked on some dark back street without signs or more importantly, no parking signs. Finally, we found the venue, the mediocre line, and the annoying girl. After inside, I darted down three flights of stairs to a bathroom. I had to pee since we left town. Chris, the singer from Count the Stars, was manning his merch booth and I snaked up next to him. He finally looked over our way and said hi to Austin and I. I asked him how things were, and he replied "I'm breathing." Count the Stars played their second show after returning to the road after a bad accident in their tour van. I cannot tell you how good it was to see them!! It made my heart warm. Anyways, on to what you guys want, THE BANDS.
Hidden in Plain View opened. Their EP dropped that day, and they were promoting their Drive Thru debut. A rowdy bunch from New Jersey, they were fun to watch. I was moved enough to let Austin purchase the EP. I actually knew a girl from the east coast that used to date one of them, but since I didn't know the details of the relationship, I let it go.
The second band was Copeland. Um, I don't know why, but I swear each one of their songs was like 15 minutes long. There was more hair on stage, flailing and waving in the jolting of the emo breakdown, than there was in the audience. Small, frail, boy-ish guys whaling, and emoting... Maybe I just wasn't in the mood. Sorry guys, but I was not impressed.
Count the Stars was next on stage and they were out-freaking-rageous!!! I will admit that I am a little biased. I love them!!! But, their show was great. They haven't skipped a beat since their hiatus. There was head bobbing, singing along, and some girl, who we dubbed the hooker, jumping up and down in her way too small tank top. This was the most action the place saw all night.
The evening polished off with The Early November, another Drive Thru band. It was a real chill to get be up close and personal with the guys. They were just hanging out like regular people. Last time I saw these guys was at the Drive Thru Invasion Tour, and there were so many kids that the merch line had to be routed outside the building. It's good to know they still have values and to know that kids at smaller shows want to see them too. All and all, a good show.
We left the venue and hailed a cab to take us to our car on Seminary, or so I thought. No car where I thought it was. We talked to cops, went to the impound, called my mom to get the plate number, and drove up and down dozens of streets, all while in the cab. Seventeen some odd dollars later, we found the car, and headed home. It could've been better, but at least we got to see Count the Stars. Tune in for Brand New double concert weekend, coming up!!!
