NEWEST STUFF

Temper Temper/The Oprahs/The Meteah Strike/The Amber Estate
The Oprahs
Union Sports Annex
Milwaukee, Wisconsin
October 29, 2004

You come to expect some things from a rock show.  A lack of timlieness is unfortunately one of those things.  This show The Oprahs Drummer, Mikegot started about half an hour late.  The thing with local shows is that they usually start late because of a lack of people.  There were a good number of people at this show at 9 p.m. when it was supposed to start.  Nonetheless, The Amber Estate took the stage at about 9:30 p.m. to an enthusiastic crowd.

The Amber Estate is a three-piece outfit with a guitar player that plays the guitar and bass at the same time!  The bottom two strings on his guitar are actually bass strings, which is pretty awesome.  They also feature a keyboard with some synth sounds which adds to a great sound.  The crowd was enthusiastic and up front right away.  I never heard of The Amber Estate but they were pretty impressive and had a good crowd.  Their set was shorter than anticipated as they only played 35 minutes.  They were scheduled for a 45 minute set.Oprahs

I had been looking forward to seeing the next band live for some time.  I had heard a lot of good things about them and thoroughly enjoyed The Meteah (pronounced Media) Strike's EP, Two Car Parade.  Their set was a little harder edged than I would have anticipated, but good nonetheless.  They had a smaller crowd than The Amber Estate and their stage presence might be the reason.  They weren't very good performers, not to be confused with being good musicians (which they are).  They took a lot of time to set-up between songs and part of the issue might have been that they were playing some new songs that will be heard on their forthcoming EP, These Colours Say Something Vibrant, on I Ate Her Records, an upstart label based out of Minneapolis and Seattle.  The album is due out in January.

The largest crowd at the venue was there to see The Oprahs.  The Oprahs put on a short, but solid, set.  The first time I saw them, they just seemed to have the look of a band about to break through.  I did not get the same feeling this Oprahstime.  Their set was solid, but it was not spectacular like the last time I saw them just a couple of months ago.

The headliner was Temper Temper.  I had not heard of them until I saw them on the show bill.  They are a five-piece with keyboards, drums, guitar, bass and a lead vocalist.  The beats were great and you could groove to them.  The lead singer was all over the stage, as you should be if you're not playing an instrument.  The main problem with this band was the vocals and the fact that all of the members have to compensate for small penises by turning their amps up to ten and giving the sound technician no room to work with.  On a side note, I heard that one of the band members and his girlfriend got caught trying to steal A-1 Steak Sauce and Heinz Ketchup from the venue's dry storage area!  I guess that's what happens when you suck.  You're relegated to stealing condiments from the venues that give you a gig.  What losers.
