Straylight Run/Hot Rod Circuit/Northstar/Say Anything

The Metro
Chicago, IL
October 27, 2004
It was one of those awesome windy days in Chicago, I was in front of the Metro and freezing my nipples off. I get in line and I’m behind two kids who are drinking alcohol out of an Ice Mountain water bottle, way to be a lush at fifteen guys. I get in and walk up the freshly painted stairs and I see that there are not a lot people here, apparently the show didn’t sell out. I hear the sounds of the opening band called Say Anything, their album came out in early August on Doghouse Records. Their sound was mediocre, maybe second-rate at best. They didn’t move a lot on stage and their lead singer looked like he was done touring after his full two weeks with Staylight Run. They weren’t your classic shitty opening band, but you can tell they still need
a bit of work.
Northstar was up next. I had never seen them live; I always thought they were okay but nothing special. I was really surprised when I saw them, their live show is one that shouldn’t be missed. They played almost everything from their second album Pollyanna (Triple Crown) and then one song from their first album. The raspy vocals of the lead singer was like the icing on the cake for this band. They blew me away with their song “Rigged and Ready.” All in all, they were pretty awesome.
Then there was Hot Rod Circuit. I had seen them before and I had never been disappointed. I hadn’t heard anything from their new album Reality’s Coming Through. They played a lot of their new material and yet again I was not disappointed. They also played some of the crowd pleasers, such as “Now or Never” and “Irish Car Bomb.” They played almost an hour set, but because there were so few people there was little jumping, and almost no moshing. During the Staylight Run’s set up I met a girl who had a Brand New tattoo and a Staylight Run tattoo. I was impressed by both, and apparently she does “Emo Porn.” I think you have sex in only in the color of brown, have a sad face on the entire time, and take pictures of each other towards the end.
Anyway, Straylight Run came out on stage and started off the night with “Dignity and Money.” Their debut album came out earlier this month and every person in that room knew every word. They played almost their entire album along with one of my personal favorite songs, “A Slow Descent.” They played about an hour and rocked my socks for every minute. The only thing I didn’t like about their show was Michele Nolan’s vocals. They were good, but her voice was strong and when it came through the amps you would have thought she broke glass. The show ended up being really goodand in six months, when Staylight Run is mainstream, people will be kicking themselves in the ass because they missed this show.
