Soundwave Concert
Unwritten Law/Regurgitator/MxPx/Lagwagon/Last Year’s Hero

October 15, 2004
McCallum Park; Perth, Australia
With Good Charlotte having headlined a concert at the same venue a night before, this could only be described as the
biggest weekend for punk music fans in Perth in years. The two concerts made up the Soundwave Festival, held outdoors on the banks of Perth’s Swan River as part of the annual Gravity Games H2O.
We got there early, but obviously not early enough, as we missed the opening band, Last Year’s Hero. Last Year’s Hero are a local pop-punk band whose national popularity is on the rise after supporting bands like Yellowcard. They have also just scored the support on the Rufio tour of Japan and Australia. While their music isn’t my thing, they were a good choice to warm up the crowd.
Next up was Lagwagon, who many people were most excited about seeing. They had never played in Perth before and even though it was only 6:30 pm, a huge crowd had already gathered. They ripped through a set of new and old songs, including such classics as "Making Friends" and "Sleep," much to the delight of the mostly older crowd.
MxPx was up next, and this was also their first visit to Perth. While I was never a huge fan of MxPx, I found their set quite enjoyable. The crowd seemed to love them and they played a lot of crowd favorites like "Chick Magnet," "I’m Ok, You’re Ok" and "Punk Rawk Show."
The next band to play were Regurgitator, which many people felt was an interesting choice to be on the bill.
Regurgitator is an Aussie band that had a string of hits in the late ‘90’s and their sound could be
described as electro pop-rock. They were meant to play on the Saturday night with Big Boi of Outkast, but he had to pull out, so they were added to the Friday night show. They played a lot of old stuff which was good, as I can’t imagine much of the crowd would’ve known any of their new stuff.
They made way for Unwritten Law. Although they’ve kept quiet for the last couple of years, their performance made it clear they are still very much alive. Scott Russo has the most incredible stage presence and he declared that he had never been as messed up as he had the night before in Perth. They played "Teenage Suicide," "Babalon," and "Lonesome" before playing a new song off their upcoming CD. It sounded like one of the heavier songs off Elva. "Seein’ Red" was a crowd favorite, but my personal highlight was "Harmonic," because it’s my favorite song of all time. They finished up with "Up All Night" and left the stage while people were expecting them to come back and play "Cailin." But they didn’t. A lot of people were probably disappointed, but not me. They further proved to me why they are probably close to being my favorite band of all time.
