Poison the Well
The Rave Eagles Club - Milwaukee, WI
2/13/04
If you’re in need of some brilliantly composed, high-density emotion then look no further. Poison the Well has got your fix. They never fail to put on a rock solid set. They are also one of the few bands who can incorporate coherent screaming into melodic, yet powerful music. This had to be their best performance I’ve seen thus far and I’ve never seen them play a bad show. They seem to raise the bar a little higher every night they set foot on stage. Like a fine chardonnay, they’ll only get better as time goes on, mark my word.
Prior to them taking the stage, it was announced that The Rave’s security refused to let the crowd mosh and that any and all moshers were subject to ejection. Yeah right! This didn’t set too well with the rebellious audience. During "Artists Rendering of Me" and "Botchla," the entire crowd instinctively erupted into a chaotic circle pit.
"There were more of us than there were them. You can’t come to a PTW show and not expect to get roughed up a little," said longtime PTW fan, Kevin Deters.
I was quite impressed when they played "12/23/93." I had seen them in concert two times prior and had never seen
the live rendition. Let’s just say, I was one of many satisfied customers. However, everyone was a little upset when the lights went on and the house music went up after Poison the Well bid the crowd a fond farewell after their final song, "Ghostchant."
They would exit stage left and about half the crowd headed for the exits. I lingered around for about five minutes and decided to head for the doors. But, there was still about 100 or so loyal patrons begging and pleading for one more song. Ask and ye shall receive. Knowing my luck, right as I get to the door, they come back out on stage. I immediately made a mad dash back inside.
Once they were back in place, their lead singer Jeff said "We don't do this very often, so what do you wanna hear?" Everyone unanimously responded "Nerdy!" We all sang it at the top of our lungs and life was good. It was a great way to end the night. I would've liked to have heard "Lazarro," "Slice Paper Wrists," or "Moments Over Exaggerate," but I can’t complain. It was a kick ass show.
