NEWEST STUFF

New Found Glory/Reggie and the Full Effect/Last Years Hero

Lookout
Perth, Australia
December 15th 2004

Reggie and the Full Effect LiveFrom the start I knew this show would be a little different, as New Found Glory was only doing one show and it just happened to be an all-ages show.  It was their first visit to Perth, despite having been to Australia quite a few times.  The tickets were quite expensive at nearly $50 Australian (about $36 US), but then again, we were also getting an overseas support act in Reggie and the Full Effect.Last Years Hero

Due to an unannounced change in door times, we missed local band Last Years Hero, as well as most of Reggie and the Full Effect’s set.  However, what we did see was quite interesting (and hilarious).  I had never really heard this band, so I had no idea what to expect.  The whole band was wearing Santa suits, which was amazing, considering it had been one of our hottest days of summer so far and it felt like it was about 1000 degrees in the room.

Reggie and the Full EffectThe weirdest part of the set was when the rest of the band left at the end and left only the lead singer, singing to 80’s techno-pop and rollerblading around the stage for a few songs, which was pretty bizarre.  It got old pretty quick with the crowd, who started to get restless.  Because I didn’t know much about the band, it made me wonder if this was a normal occurrence at one of their shows.

New Found Glory came on not too long after and launched straight into "Failure’s Not Flattering"New Found Glory followed by "This Disaster" and "Understatement."  The young crowd was loud and extremely energetic and despite it being so hot, the band kept up.  They complained about the heat, suggesting that maybe we move the whole show to the beach across the road.  They did the whole "we love Perth" thing and "why has it taken us so long to come here?" thing, which went down well with the crowd, but you never actually know if bands mean it or not.

New Found GloryThey played a huge set including songs from all albums.  By the end of the set, all of their songs started to sound so similar that I thought they’d played some songs twice.  They left the stage after an hour, but returned a few minutes later for an encore.  For the encore they played "Sonny," "Glory of Love" and finished the show up with "All Downhill From Here."

Even though it was incredibly hot and the young crowd was incredibly annoying, New Found Glory still put on a great show, which hopefully won’t be their last in Perth.  It probably went on a little long, but maybe if it hadn’t been so hot, it would’ve been more bearable.  Overall New Found Glory is a great live band.
