NEWEST STUFF

More North/Hidden in Plain View/Hellogoodbye/Houston Calls/Madison
Madison Live
The Metro
Chicago, IL
September 5, 2004

Once again, the Metro did not sell out for awesome bands.  I walked in and checked my bag, and then I went upstairs Madison Promo Shotto catch the first song of the opening band called Madison.  Watching Madison was one of the oddest experiences I had while watching a band.  Their music was great, but their stage presence was just amazingly weird.  The keyboard player looked like Claudio Sanchez, and the lead singer looked like Adam Lazzara before he grew his hair out.   At one point, I turned around and rocked out, just so it wouldn’t be so awkward; but seriously their music is great.

hidden in plain viewNext up was Houston Calls.  I had heard of this band but didn’t know anything about them.  They started playing and I fell in love immediately, these guys are The Reunion Show Jr.  These guys were awesome-core all the way.  The only thing that bugged me out would be their overzealous keyboard player named Okie.  They had a fun beat that got the small crowd dancing.  After that was one my favorite bands, Hellogoodbye.  First, before I say anything, dancing for a band like Hellogoodbye is not only fun, but a good way to meet cute girls.  So I must say I promote awkward dancing, except for the two kids I saw during their set.  A girl (who was mightily “Hot Topic-ed” out) and her gay best friend, decided to choreograph a dance to some of Hellogoodbye’s songs. Though More Northit was interesting and original, the choreography sucked, and so did the uncoordinated gay kid.

Hellogoodbye rocked the hell out of the Metro.  They played a few new songs and almost all of the songs from their self-titled EP.  Never have four guys with short gym shorts and a tambourine looked so masculine.  The Chicago date of the tour ended up being the last date for Hellogoodbye and Hidden in Plain View.  I don’t know if anyone has ever been to the last date of tour, but it's tradition to fuck the bands you’ve been hanging out with for the last few weeks.  The guys in Hidden in Plain View came out during the last song “Shimmy Shimmy Quarter Turn,” and just went crazy.

hidden in plain viewNext was Hidden in Plain View, this band did not fit the rest of the bill at all, but completely rocked the shit out of The Metro as well.  For only having a five song EP out, these guys have a great following, and an even better live show.  During their entire set kids kept getting pulled out and scolded by security guards.  They played my favorite song “20 below” last, and the crowd went wild.  The guys in Hellogoodbye came out for a little revenge, and their costumes were much better.  One member came out as beer bottle.  This was also the first time I have ever witnessed a band crowd surf on stage before.  After this, a lot of the kids left and missed an awesome set by More North (by the way, that’s really shitty to do to any band, so don’t).  This was More North’s CD release show and all of their friends were in attendance.  We rocked out to all of the bands material, and friends came out of nowhere to sing random verses of songs.  They got the whole crowd to throw up the rock hand, and shake it like a Polaroid picture as well.  Altogether, this might have been one of the most fun shows I have ever attended.
