Odd Fans & Mexican Jumping Beans equals Midtown?

April 9, 2002 . The Rave . Milwaukee, WI

Most punk show reviews begin something like "the band's high energy presence on stage pumped up the audience as they throbbed to the beat." I'd start this review in the same way, though it would only be half true. Midtown hopped on stage and proceeded to jump around like four Mexican Jumping Beans in a shoebox for the duration of the show. Although, they might as well have been playing in a shoebox. Shoeboxes don't have audiences and Midtown really didn't have one either.

I know that diversity is good, but the diverse crowd that filled well over half of the Rave was just plain odd. The audience was filled with your average tried and true teenage punk, but also with a 35-year old bald guy standingMidtown Live next to me wearing a Face To Face sweatshirt, and a long-haired stoner smoking a joint in the back. There were many other interesting creatures there too, but I'm guessing you wanna hear more about the band.

Midtown did their best to rile up the strange brew in front of them trying to get the crowd involved with various sing and jump alongs. This though, was all to no avail. Even though Midtown played with their hearts on older tunes such as "Faulty Foundation" and "Just Rock n' Roll," the audience maintained their "hard to get" attitude.

During Midtown's 40-minute set, the band also introduced songs from their new album, Living Well Is The Best Revenge. The new songs sounded slightly raw, but more developed and thought out than tracks off their first album. They'll come along in live quality after the band logs a few more live shows.

All in all, if you are a Midtown fan, you'll enjoy their live show. If you aren't the biggest fan of Midtown, give them a chance anyway - you never know what you might like. Whether you are a fan of Midtown or not, all I ask is that if you see them live, have a great time and let them see that you are having fun along with them.
