Metallica/Godsmack

Metallica is known by their fans as "Metal Gods" and tonight that would definetely be true...
The night was wet and rainy, but there was still a great atmosphere at the Gaylord
Ent. Center (GEC) in Nashville, TN. When you first walked through the doors and past the security guards you see this wall of merch. Most of it was Metallica stuff but there was some Godsmack. The shirts, pins, and etc. were awesome, but the cheapest t-shirt was $30! Even though the shirts were a tad expensive, that didn't stop people from forming massive lines infront of the merchendise stand.
The show started around 7pm with Godsmack opening. In an interview, Godsmack spoke of how great it was to be on tour with Metallica and how the band told them that they could do whatever the wanted to do onstage. Seeing how most headliners restrict the openers to a certain time slot, no pyro, and other weird restrictions; Metallica gave the the guys of Godsmack the go-ahead to do as they please.
Godsmack played about an hour show, with all their hit songs. The band consisting of Sully Erna, vocals, Tony Rambola, guitar, Robbie Merrill, bass, and Tommy Stewart, drums started the night off with "Straight Out of Line." The band looked and sounded great. The show was played on a center stage, with all four sides having mics and steps for the guys of the band. To add a cool touch, the drums rotated in a circle for just about every song. I also give props to whomever did the paint job on the guy's guitars, they were very original.
The guys also played "Faceless," "Make me Believe," "Re-align," "I Fucking Hate You," "The Awakening," and "Serenity." The guys also had a pyro to make more of a dramatic show. Close to the end of their set Godsmack reviled a second drum set and then a drumming dual between and started. While one would be killing the drums the other would be doing some kind of fancy trick with his sticks. Their set was ended with Vodoo, or so we thought until the guys got back onstage and ended their set with "I stand alone". Over all Godsmack kicked some serious ass.
The transition of the bands took about an hour, but the entertainment didn't en
d there. Of when you go to any metal concert there is going to be those two crazy people, and this show was no different. There was one couple who was trying to get "it" started, and the crowd of prev guys were cheering while their female companions were booing. But thank god the show finally got started around 9pm.
It was time for the "Metal Gods" to kick off their part of the show. James Hetfield, vocals, Kirk Hammett, guitar, Lars Ulrich, drums, and Cliff Burton, bass, kicked the show off with "Sad But True". The guys had a great deal of pyro, but at times is was a bet too much. The crowd was bowing to their "Gods" throughout the show. About half way through the show you could smell something with a weird tang to it, damn potheads!
The show was played on a stage where the entire stage moved in a circle and finished making its 360 degree turn at the end of the show. The guys of Metallica played a show for close to two hours, and it was two hours full hard, true metal. The James and the guys covered one song, Aerosmith "Walk This Way".
Metallica played many songs throughout the show including songs from their new album St.Anger. To end one hell of a night the guys played probably their most famous song "Enter Sandman". This was one hell of a finally to one of the best concerts of the year! Even though tickets cost $55-$75, it was well worth it.
I give Metallica and Godsmack 4.8Xs!
