Mest, Sugarcult, Unwritten Law
March 8, 2002 . The Rave . Milwaukee, WI
As I walked into the basement at The Rave in Milwaukee with a large group of kiddies from Marquette University,
I could here the echoing sound of Sugarcult from the stage. Now give me a break because I went to this concert around three weeks ago so my memory of it isn't that good. All I remember is Sugarcult playing a wonderful set. They played all the hits, "Stuck in America," "You're the One," "Pretty Girl," and my personal favorites, "Bouncing Off the Walls" and "Hate Every Beautiful Day." The crowd was very into Sugarcult, which was nice for the opening band. I mean would you like to have hundreds of kids just standing there staring at you?
Fast forward to Mest, my personal second favorite band behind the great trio of Green Day. Opening with the song "Opinions," the energy was incredible as Tony, Jer, Matt and Nick took the stage. As "Opinions" ended, I
tried to work my way up to the front as the guys broke into "Hotel Room." This being my favorite Mest song, I promptly found someone who would put me up and crowd surfed for quite a while, almost the whole song. Most of the rest of the concert seems only like a blur in my memory now. I do remember them playing "Fuct Up Kid" and their song off the Not Another Teen Movie soundtrack, "I Melt With You." I took a break during these songs, but was right back up in the crowd for the hit "Cadillac." They closed as usual with the hidden song on the album Wasting Time, "Fuck the Greyhound Bus," and then they left the stage to much applause. The only disappointment for me during this concert was that they didn't play "Slow Motion."
I didn't stay around to listen to Unwritten Law for long. The only two songs I really wanted to hear were
"Lonesome" and "Cailin." UL played "Lonesome" second so I ran into the crowd for that, then as I retreated, they played a song or two. After I found my girlfriend, they played "Cailin," so I took her and we listened to that and then took off back to the old beer can on the corner of 16th and Wisconsin.
These concerts were f*cking pimp. It was my first time seeing Unwritten Law, my second seeing Sugarcult, and my third seeing Mest. Overall, I think Mest puts on a great show, but so did the other two. Anyhow, go see these guys, buy their records, and listen to XROXX. It's cool.
