Less Than Jake = Below Average
March 20, 2002 . The Rave . Milwaukee, WI
The phrase "Less Than Jake" means being below average, as was their performance on March 20, 2002 opening for Bad Religion. Now the bad performance wasn’t all their fault. It wasn’t too bad of a performance, but overall it was a bad experience. They played in the Eagles Ballroom in Milwaukee, WI, which is a 25,000 square foot deathbed for quality sound. Hell, the 8-track player in my grandfather's Rambler sounds better than that place. As they took the stage, Chris, their guitarist and singer, commented on how badly the PA system was echoing. Then after their first song he was bitching about how sh*tty the sound quality was.
I sampled the mosh pit, or lack there of, briefly. It was quite weak and consisted of several people falling down and a lot of cheap shots. The crowd surfers weren’t too courteous either. Just a reminder that if, and when, you choose to crowd surf, you are putting yourself in a very vulnerable position. And if you kick or throw elbows then you are fair game for crotch punches and ankle twisting. Yes, I did get kicked and elbowed, but that’s all part of any concert experience and I am by no means complaining. I will, however, complain about the not so slim females who decided to crowd surf, which is completely uncalled for. And the fact that there was a delay in the middle of the set because a barricade fell down and the crowd wasn’t very cooperative or helpful either.
LTJ’s performance could have been a little more energetic and worthwhile. Even though I got in for free, I still felt cheated out of my money. I took a peak at their set list for the night before and at that show they played 23 songs in an hour-long set and did an encore. At this show, they played no more than 15 songs and only played for 40 minutes, with no encore. They also failed to play almost everyone’s favorite song, “Johnny Quest Thinks We’re Sellouts.” I saw them play their set on the Warped Tour this past summer and they were much better then. They came out 20 minutes early, played all the hits, and totally kicked ass. Their shows are kind of hit and miss as far as good performances go. Their Milwaukee date was definitely a miss, but I suppose it could have been worse. So if you’re going to see them, your taking a chance. I hope you get your money’s worth and all of us here at XROXX wish you the best of luck.
