NEWEST STUFF

Finger Eleven & Thornley/Moments in Grace/Strata
The Recher Theater in Maryland
The Recher
Timonium, Maryland
July 30, 2004

After paying only 15 dollars for this show, this concert blew me away.  The show opened in the small gloomy fire torch lit room of the Recher.  Strata took the stage and pumped the crowd up with songs like "I Will Breath Fire" and "The Strata Promo ShotPanic."  Many in the crowd didn’t know the band but the few that did screamed the lyrics and pushed the crowd forward.  Strata was promoting their new self-titled album, and were kind enough to sign shirts and CD's after they played their set.

Following Strata was Moments in Grace, a band relatively unknown to me.  Moments in Grace put on a nice set but some of their songs were repetitive and messy, but that Moments In Gracemy have been because the sound during their set was a little uneven.  Next was the first band splitting the headline, Thornley.  A band founded by Ian Thornley is a mix between what I would describe as a touch of country with alternative rock.  This band was a lot of fun.  Playing about nine songs, Thornley got the crowd completely hyped.  Finishing one of their songs with a ten minute drum solo from Sekou Lumumba, a lot of moshing began but security took care of that because the show was all ages and didn’t want the younger kids to get hurt.

After Thornley finished their set, the stage went black for over an hour.  Many were becoming inpatient, including me. Finally after over an hour of waiting Scott Anderson the voice of Finger Eleven took the stage, his amazing voice range through The RecherFinger 11 Promo Shot and when the rest of the band joined ever thing came together in perfect balance.   The crowd pushed forward as Finger Eleven opened with the energetic "Absent Elements." The entire crowd of about 600 were singing along.  Also playing a few songs acoustically, including "One Thing" added a soft touch to this loud concert. Playing their entire new album, about four songs from their first two albums, and the clock almost at 12:30pm, many people were ready to leave for the night.  But here is where the unexpected twist happened.  Apparently their bus driver had gotten lost from the hotel to the venue and since they couldn’t leave until their bus drive got there, Finger Eleven ended up playing about three more songs, including repeating their newest single "Stay in Shadow."  At around 1:15 am, the show let out and everyone tired from standing for over 5-1/2 hours pilled onto the sidewalk outside of the Recher.  Strata and Moments in Grace were outside, signing their awesome merchandise, and the bus driver finally pulled up behind the Recher, this show was officially over.  I will never forget this show because it was such a diverse range of music including screamo, country, and rock.  If you like anything from Blink 182 to Slipknot, I think you would like one or all of these bands.  I would recommend this show and go see it again in a second.
