Das Oath/Some Girls/Wrangler Brutes/Look Back and Laugh/Joseph Karam/Dave Stone

Chain Reaction
Anaheim, CA
November 21, 2004
Just got home from the show, damn, Das Oath rocked. Despite their name change and some member changes, they still had the rock oozing from every pore. Mark McCoy from the Chicago band Charles Bronson is still singing. Though, much like any show that has a very excellent headlining act, there are usually a bunch of bands that really suck playing with them.
One such band was the opener, Joseph Karam/Dave Stone, a noisy side project with the keyboardist from the Locust. If you have seen and liked bands like Bastard Noise, you may like this, but I don't recommend it to anyone who doesn't like waves of insane random noises blasting from Moog synthesizers. They only seem to have gotten onto the show through some kind of scene connections, since other members of the Locust were playing later.
Next was Look Back and Laugh. With a recent split with Drop Dead under their belts, I was hoping for a more intense performance out of this Northern California crew, but no. The lackluster performance was only aggravated by the fact that they had a chick singer, which is put into perspective by the often used phrase, "s
he screamed awesome, for a girl," which is one of the biggest crocks of shit in the music biz. If a girl is gonna rock, she has to rock as good as a boy. This girl singer did not.
During the next band, The Wrangler Brutes, Danny (my ride down to Anaheim) decided to go on a mission to find a place to take a shit. The Beans from Rubio's were doing a number on his tummy; he ended up crapping in a doorway and using his underwear to wipe his ass. That is really much more exciting than anything that I could think to write about this band. They just didn't have it. I would say they were a weaker version of Le Shok. If you like weak Le Shoks, go see them.
Second to last was a band that I had heard a lot about on the car ride down, members of Locust teamed up with members of the Melvins. I figured it would be another shitty Locust side project, just to spike 3oneG record sales in Japan, but I was pleasantly surprised to find out that this was a good hardcore band, fast and loud. They may have been the best band of the night, but we were there to see Das Oath.
It was worth my ten bucks in the end. Four X's out of five sums it up. Go buy the records.
