Counterpunch/Drew Neely/17 Come Sunday

Oak Lawn Ice Arena
October 15, 2004
Well, I haven't seen Drew Neely play since back in June, so I was particularly excitied about this show. When I first arrived the ice arena was pretty dead. Then as time went by people starting coming. Before the show started I got a chance to talk to Drew and the boys of Counterpunch. They are cool people.
The first band that played was 17 Come Sunday. They were OK. They did a few Green Day covers that weren't bad. Then they covered "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)" by My Chemical Romance. It was absolutely horrible. They had some Chinese guy that they knew come up and sing it and he kept missing lines and not holding the notes for long enough. He also sang a bunch of it off-key. I hope that band never covers that song again, and if they do cover it again, I hope they don't have that Chinese dude sing.
Then Drew was up. He did an awesome set. The first song he did was "Hey," and at
one point he started making a bunch of noises to make it sound like the guitar solo since he couldn't do one that well with an acoustic. Then later on he was started singing a some song and out of no one he screams "I hate my dad." Then at one point, he was introducing a song and he was like "Since you all already thing I'm conceited and no one else does this. I'm gonna dedicated this next song to myself." Then he starts playing the song and changes the first verse to make it take about himself. For example, the first few lyrics in the song are "Why won't you just talk to me/Tell me everything that's on your mind" and he changed them to "Why won't I just talk to me/Tell me everything that's on my mind." It was funny as hell. Y a, Drew has a really good voice that you would not expect to come out of him. That's one thing I can tell you about his music.
Then after that Dear You came on. They aren't that bad. They covered "Break Out" by Foo Fighters. During it, this guy, EJ (this guy from Begging For Mercy) was dancing around everyone. It was quite funny. Then they played "Mr. Right," too. Afterwards my friend and I were hanging out with Drew Neely. Then we went home.
Ya, Drew Neely is definitely someone you want to see play live because his shows are funny as hell. Also, you should see him because he'll rock your face off with his awesomeness.
