Anti-Flag/The Lawrence Arms/Shotgun Wedding

Amplifier Bar
Perth, Australia
February 16, 2005
Having already seen Anti-Flag earlier in the day at the all-ages show (which was also their first-ever show in Australia), I was just as excited to be seeing them again. For those of you who have seen them, you’ll know what an awesome
show they put on, so I was certain I wouldn’t be disappointed.
Shotgun Wedding, a local Perth band, were the opening band. Since it was so hot and the venue was well past capacity, I sat outside while they played. It seemed like a good decision as they weren’t my sort of band. They sounded very metal, which didn’t really fit in with the other bands at all.
Chicago’s The Lawrence Arms were up next and for a band who is not very well known
down here in Australia, a lot of people sang along and they got a really good response from the crowd. They later told me that it surprised them as they didn’t really expect anyone to have heard of them. Their set was mainly songs off their album The Greatest Story Ever Told, like "On With the Show," "Ramblin’ Boys of Pleasure" and "Raw and Searing Flesh." They also played some older songs and finished up with "Necrotism: Decanting the Insalubrious (Cyborg Midnight) Part 7," which is their song off last year’s Rock Against Bush Vol II. They played a really good set, despite singer/bassist Brendan being drunk (he was having shooters onstage).
Then Anti-Flag came out. They greeted the crowd and opened up with "No Borders," which was an interesting choice for an opener, as at the previous show the first song they played was "Rank’n’File," which really got the crowd going. They played a really balanced set of
songs off their latest album, The Terror State, as well as lots of older songs like "Got the Numbers," "Underground Network," "Stars and Stripes," "Fuck Police Brutality" and "Watch the Right."
If you’ve ever seen Anti-Flag you will know that they like to talk to the crowd about politics and world issues, and we had wondered earlier what they would say to us. So it was quite surprising that the band knew a lot about the recent re-election of our Prime Minister and other political issues that concerned Australia.
They left the stage after about 50 minutes, but with the crowd chanting, "We want more!" They quickly returned for a three song encore. After the first show I had asked Justin Sane and Pat Thetic if
they would consider playing a really old song "Drink, Drank, Punk." They laughed and said they don’t play it anymore. So imagine my surprise when Justin, during the encore, said that he noticed Perth people loved to drink and that some people had asked him especially to play a song called...that’s right, you guessed it. They played "Drink, Drank, Punk," which was most definitely the highlight of a show I thought couldn’t get any better. Justin later told me that no one had ever convinced them to play that song and that they all felt dumber after they played it!
They finished up with "Turncoat," which was a crowd sing-along and it was apparent after the show that Anti-Flag blew everyone in the crowd away with how good they were. The band themselves also said they’d had a great time and really enjoyed the shows, so hopefully that means it won’t be the last we see of them. This was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen.
