Rock Against Bush Tour

The Metro in Chicago

MidtownThe audience at this “Rock Against Bush” concert was one bursting with sentiment against our current President, with the exception of this chick Grace from Loyola University in Chicago who is actually a republican of voting age but came to the show just because she likes Anti-Flag.  Yeah, not everything needs to make sense when it comes to this Presidential race.  There seemed to be a great abundance of extreme youth at Tuesday night’s show, with some audience members not looking a day over ten.  It seems like kids are starting their political activism as well as their punk rock concert attendance earlier and earlier these days.  (Do I sound like I’m getting old or what?!)

Midtown was the second band to play Tuesday’s show, and their music was surprisingly Strike Anywheresuperb.  The band is talented musically and puts forth a good show.  Next to play was Strike Anywhere, another very impressive ensemble.

The most unique set of the night had to be that of The Nightwatchman, an acoustic guitar player whose emotional lyrics touch everyone who has been affected by the war in Iraq, the ill decisions made by our nation’s leader, or Anti-Flagany injustice our country’s history retains.  Introduced by his outspoken mother, who proclaims “Fuck Bush,” musician Tom Morello sings songs about freedom and inspire action against oppression.  Unlike Anti-Flag’s aggressive musical styling, the Nightwatchman’s music allows the audience to take a break from moshing and just stand there, taking in the words he is saying and the messages he is trying to get across.

Headlining the concert as well as the entire tour was the infamous Anti-Flag.  Included in their set was “Fuck Police Brutality,” which seems to be a usual for their shows.  For their encore, they played the fan favorite, “Die for Your Government,” before they were joined by the Nightwatchman for a lesser known rendition of “This Land is Your Land” which totally blew the version we learned when we were kids away.
