NEWEST STUFF

Against Me!/The Critics/11th He Reaches London/Standard Deviants
Rosemount Hotel
Against Me
Perth, Western Australia
September 15, 2004

I knew a lot of people that were really looking forward to this show; and they hadn’t even necessarily heard Against Me! before.  It was just that, this was the first real punk show we’d had all year.  Sure, we have a thriving local scene, but without visiting interstate and overseas bands to support, there just aren’t enough people that are willing to pay money every weekend to see the same bands.

The show took place at the Rosemount Hotel, which is a really small little pub that only holds about 400 people.  Punk shows in Perth are usually held in bigger venues, but because Against Me! isn’t that well known yet, they weren’t expecting that many people.

Despite this, the pub was quite packed.  A local band I’d never heard of before called the Standard Deviants opened the show.  I didn’t pay much attention, but they seemed OK.  They had a more of a rock ’n’ roll sound.  Next up were another local band called 11th He Reaches London.  I’d never seen them play before, but I’d heard great things and they seemed to have quite a following in the hardcore scene.  I was disappointed, as to me, they were a complete rip-off of Thursday, even down to the singer’s clothes, haircut and movements.  I quickly lost interest, but they definitely had the crowd’s support.

After that, The Critics took to the stage.  The Critics are a Perth band, who have earned quite a national following in the last couple of years. They’ve recently been recording and they haven’t played many shows, so this was quite a rare chance to see them again.  The Critics are an awesome band and have a huge local following.  They definitely got the crowd’s attention.  They played a mix of old and new songs, which Against Me! Livekept the crowd happy.  The Critics are definitely a band that deserves success and with a growing interstate fan base, I’m sure they will get it soon enough.

Against Me! was the final band of the night.  They didn’t say much, but they rocked, so it didn’t matter.  They ripped through a set of songs evenly picked from both their albums, As The Eternal Cowboy and Reinventing Axl Rose.  The crowd got into them, even starting a decent sized mosh pit at the front.  They thanked the crowd for supporting them and said it was great to be in Australia.  Against Me!’s live show was amazing; really intense, and full of energy.  I think a lot of people came not knowing what to expect, but left impressed.  The show would have definitely earned the band some new fans.  A great show.
