I picked up this CD one Saturday, only because I was extremely bored and desperate for some new tunes to keep me
occupied. At first I wasn’t sure about buying a CD from a band I knew NOTHING about...but I had a few extra bucks and decided to take a gamble.
I got home and put it in my CD player, and within the first ten seconds of the first song, “44. Caliber Love Letter,” I was already impressed by the catchy little guitar riff that started off the track. After about 15 seconds or so another guitar jumped in, and after that the song kept getting crazier, heavier, and more complex every ten seconds. By the end of the two minute long intro I had already declared the song a masterpiece...and when the song actually started, all I could do was stare at my CD player in amazement for about the next 45 minutes.
Overall, alexisonfire is a very talented band with two amazing guitar players who can
blister a fret board, a pretty good drummer, one of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard, and some of the angriest screaming and yelling I have ever heard. This surprised me coming from a Canadian band. Another thing that surprised me was the crazy, mind-blowing lyrics that even though they amaze you, at the same time you wonder what they were on when they wrote the song. An example of this comes from my personal favorite song on the disk, “Pulmonary Archery,” in which lead vocalist George Pettit screams at the top of his lungs (as always), “the Alamo has been penetrated and there is little hope
for the white man/so hop on your rainbow and ride into oblivion.” No really, isn’t that a bit random and crazy? Maybe I just don’t get it, but either way...it's brilliant.
Most songs on this CD have the same idea and structure; they start off slow and then explode into incredible, melodic guitar riffs through the whole song, and beautiful singing with raw screaming over top of it. This is the kind of music that makes you want to jump up and kick your mom rite in the face. The energy you feel off of it is unbelievable, there is no way you can listen to this band without cranking it up, and there is no way you can crank it up and sit still. The whole vibe of the music is great and I have never heard anything like it.
Needless to say, I am very please with this album. I recommend this to fans of Atreyu, Underoath, Unearth, and maybe some From Autumn to Ashes fans. This album will blow you away.
