Weezer
Maladroit

Interscope Records
Release Date: May 14, 2002
If I've learned anything about Weezer in the eight years I've listened to their music, it's that I haven't learned anything about Rivers Cuomo. The lead singer and songwriter for Weezer has an incredibly complex mind, and it shows in his music. Upon first listening to Maladroit, Weezer's newest release, I didn't find anything worth mentioning. Then, since it's only about 34 minutes long, I listened to it again. Afterwards I tried to write this review, but halfway through writing, I had to listen to it again because I realized I wasn't sure if I liked the album or not. Now, my decision is final; I don't know how he does it, but Rivers Cuomo writes music that grows on you.
At first, I thought the whole album was nothing more than heavily-distorted electric guitars and wailing lyrics. It seemed very unlike the Weezer I knew. While I do still miss the upbeat feel of songs like "Surf Wax America" and "Island in the Sun," I found that Maladroit contained a new style that I've begun to enjoy just as much.
Weezer has managed to strike the right balance between light and dark. Cuomo's voice still has that pop-rock quality, but when the instruments are added in, the result is a blend that hooks you after a few listens. Tracks such as "Keep Fishin'" and "Death and Destruction" exhibit this very well. The guitar could be right out of a heavy metal band, but the vocals bring the song back to the Weezer we all knew and loved after their first album. The guitar solo on "December" really shows Cuomo's love for rock and roll, and over all, so does the entire album.
This album gives me hope that someday rock music will once again dominate, because there might be more people like Rivers Cuomo out there, defending it to the death. So, if you like Weezer, or did like them in the mid-90's, listen to Maladroit, listen to it again, and listen to it again until you like it, because I'm sure you will.
