The Living End
Modern Artillery

Warner Brothers
Release Date: March 2, 2004
Modern Artillery is Australia’s The Living End’s first new material since 2001’s Roll On and since singer/amazing guitarist
Chris Cheney’s car crash in 2002 that left him in rehab for months. The Living End mastered the “punkibilly” sound with previous albums and totally rocked out with Roll On. I don’t know what kind of album fans would be expecting, but Modern Artillery does not disappoint me in the least.
The album starts off with a bang with the catchy “What Would You Do?” The track is only 1:27 seconds long, but it may be one of my favorite songs on the album. A great album always needs a great song to start it off. Anyway, the disc moves to the second track “One Said To The Other.” Still rocking, and still catchy. “One Said To The Other” is a great song with rad guitar fills. The third song on the CD, “Who’s Gonna Save Us?” is the first single off the album. I remember I saw them play this on Conan O’Brien a couple of weeks before Modern Artillery came out and I fell in love with it then. I still love this song. Just the guitar solo in this tune makes me tingle.
In my opinion, the first three songs are so good that they are worth the money you shell out to buy the disc. The rest of the album could be annoying Coheed and Cambria
songs for all I care and I’d still buy the disc. The first three songs led me to believe that this was going to be one of the best records of the year, but the album takes a fall for the worse. The rest of the songs are good, but some like “Maitland Street”, “Putting You Down”, and the 8 minute and 7 second “The Room” get a little boring. Don’t get me wrong, these are very well written songs with great guitar playing and vocal patterns, but they just don’t grab you by the nuts like the tunes from the previous albums did. They’re a little slower and a little longer, but still good. Some songs that stand out after the first
three are the half-electronica track “Short Notice,” the acoustic “So What,” the rockin' “Hold Up,” and the catchy “In The End.”
The Living End has always been an amazing band that puts out great records. Everyone in the band holds up their part to make great music. The Living End always seems to have awesome bass lines, good drum beats, amazing guitar leads, and well-done vocals. Modern Artillery is great, but I’d say the two previous albums are a little better overall. However, the few songs I stated before are better than any song The Living End has ever put out. If you’re a first time Living End listener I recommend their self-titled disc, but Modern Artillery is still pretty damn good. I’ll put it this way, it’s worth the money you pay, but it is no masterpiece.
