Yesterday Rules

Lookout Records
Release Date: January 13, 2004
Do you know who I love? Dr. Frank, that’s who. He’s the singer/guitarist/amazing songwriter for MTX. I’ve always
thought that he writes better songs than just about anyone on the planet. The chord structures, the lyrics, and the melodies are all awesome. He’s a genius. Him and MTX have had a lot to do with this “pop-punk” sound that so many people seem to love. Since 1986, MTX have been putting out some rockin’ “pop-punk” albums, but Yesterday Rules is a little different.
Yesterday Rules starts out with one of the only “pop-punk” style songs on the whole album, “She’s Not A Flower.” When hearing this song I thought, “Hey, this is the good old MTX I’ve listened to and enjoyed for years.” After hearing the second song, “Fucked Up On Life,” I knew this album was going to be different. The second track is slower and features acoustic guitars, but still seems to have Dr. Frank’s touch of songwriting embedded into it. The third track and probably my favorite, “Oh, Just
Have Some Faith In Me,” was also slowed down. After listening to the entire album I didn’t know what to think. One of my favorite discs of all time is MTX’s Love Is Dead. It’s a fast-paced pop-punk album with loud guitars. Yesterday Rules is nothing like it. I have to admit, after my first listen of Yesterday Rules I was a little disappointed, but I decided to give it another spin.
The album really grew on me. Yesterday Rules was the only CD in my CD player for about two weeks. Every song is different and none of them let me down. Dr. Frank’s songs still had those great lyrics and great melodies, but they just weren’t really punk anymore. That’s fine by me because I still loved this album. There was an array of acoustic songs such as “Big, Strange, Beautiful Hammer,” “Jill,” and “Institutionalized Misogyny.” Then, there was a lot of poppier/catchy songs like “Take All The Time You Need,” “The Boyfriend Box,” “Everybody Knows You’re Crying,” and “Sorry For Freaking Out On The Phone Last Night.” And of course, Yesterday Rules still had
some loud and fast songs like “Elizabeth Or Fight!” and “Shining.” Yesterday Rules had a good mixture of songs that kept me listening the whole way through over and over again.
I guess Yesterday Rules is the kind of album that grows on you. I can honestly tell you that I loved it and I’m still not sick of it. You can’t just expect MTX to sound the same for over 15 years, but you could expect them to start majorly sucking. That’s not the case for MTX. I think MTX is still on top of their game. Let the teenybopper posers play their new “pop-punk” and make millions because MTX will still be out there working their asses off and making some of the best albums ever.
