NEWEST STUFF

Mest
Self-Titled

Mest with Mest

Maverick Records
Release Date: June 10, 2003

There was a time when pop-punk wasn't filled to the brim with cookie cutter copies or thirteen-year old girls idolizing Avril for her rebellious nature and punk-rock wrist spikes.  It was like GOOD Canadian beer, unlike the watered-down crap that Ms. Lavigne serves up on a regular basis.  Mest is probably a reason why the genre has gone down hill for the past couple years, but I can't hate them for it.  At one point, believe it or not, Mest was one of the best pop-punk bands on the block.  Their older album, Wasting Time, was, and still is, one of the best I've heard.  With their fifth CD under their wings, they have proven once again that they are POP-punk.

MestWhile listening to this album, I couldn't help but want to skip through a song once or twice... or twelve times. There's a limit to how much a man can take before he just explodes and I reached the boiling point.  So, I just put on some Death Cab for Cutie MP3's and I wrote this review based on memory.  Sorry to all you Mest fans out there, but I don't get what you see in these guys anymore. They say 'if it's not broken, don't fix it'... but, sometimes you need to replace parts to make it work correctly.  Mest should have put that to mind while making this CD.

From the first song to the last, it's candy canes and lollipops, all the same flavor.  The first track starts with some weird, freaky ambient noises and then escalates into some sort of singing.  It sounded pretty good for the first minute or two, then I started to wonder what I was going to eat for dinner.  When I realized what I was going to eat, it was about four songs in and I didn't even notice a change. Track eight was a pretty decent song and so were ten and eleven.  Track eleven is probably the only song worth listening to and it's because I like ballads - otherwise it'd suck, too.

That's about it.  No music anaysis for this one, folks.  If you listened to these guys circa 1999-2000 and enjoyed their previous album, then you'll definitely like this one because it's the exact same CD.  I'm still thinking about dinner, so I'm going to cut it short here.  Make sure you go out and get the *new* CD by Death cab for Cutie entitled Transatlanticism.  It's incredible.
