Mae
Destination Beautiful

Tooth & Nail Records
Release Date: February 25, 2003
Emo, a term with no real definition, has been an astounding force in my life. The scale of bands that meet the emo-esque requirement are so vast and plentiful which makes it hard to put the term into words that I can translate. Mae is one of those bands that is in that spectrum - but not really (The phrase 'You can't judge a book by its cover' comes to mind here). Destination Beautiful offers a mixture of pop and rock that sure sounds a lot like emo. Hell, even the lyrics are emo, with the exception that a ten year-old could write them.
The first track, "This Time is the Last Time," is definetly the hook, line, and sinker of this disk. Great strumming coincides with equally good vocals which in turn becomes harder and bassier with an added chorus that knocks your socks off. The following song, "All Deliberate Speed," also helps get the album off the ground. How can you go wrong with a minute long 'rock out' ending? Other songs, like fan favorite "Embers and Envelopes," "Last Call," "Summertime," and "Goodbye, Goodnight" represent the album very well. That is, if you like pop-rock (no, not the candy).
To say that Mae is emo is like saying Madonna isn't old. So before you go out and buy this album because you heard they were emo, think about what emo means to you. If you are in it for the lyrics, don't bother. Mae just passes off as an elementary Dashboard Confessional, albeit, a very good clone. If you like Dashboard Confessional, you'll probably like these guys as well. But don't expect to hear some heartfelt screaming or anything, because all Mae has to offer is some really catchy music.
(P.S. This CD is one of my favorites of the year, I'm just a bastard.)
XROXX RATING: XXXX/ (4.5 X's out of a possible 5 X's)
