Letter Kills
The Bridge

Island Records
Release Date: July 27, 2004
The first time I ever heard of Letter Kills was in early July 2004. I didn’t look into them much, but I ended up
catching their set on the Warped Tour the following month. Their amazing stage presence and sound prompted me to pick up their record, The Bridge, a few days after the show. Right when I listened to it I knew it would be the CD I’d have on repeat for quite a long time.
If you like bands of the hardcore, rock, or modern punk genres then Letter Kills is the band for you. You’ll notice the combination of those genres when the CD kicks off with an awesome track called “Lights Out.” I couldn’t choose a better song to kick off an album. It’s upbeat and is the type of song that can, immediately, put you in a good mood. It’s chorus, “Don't wait for tomorrow/raise your voice tonight/[Hey! Hey!]/This hate is burning so let's watch it die/’Cause when it falls/our voice will ring so loud/[Hey! Hey!]/Don't wait for tomorrow just raise your voice tonight/Lights out!” is somewhat empowering. It has choppy guitars and screams in all of the right places, which is why I’d say it’s one of the best songs on the album.
The track that follows, entitled “Don’t Believe,” is the first single off the album. It
consists of a very catchy chorus and, also, a great guitar solo. Another one of my favorite songs on the CD is track seven, “Carry You.” It starts out with thumping drums and wastes no time in displaying the musical talent of the band. This song, too, has a great guitar solo.
The endless display of talent on the guitarists’ parts has to be one of the highlights of The Bridge. It really adds a lot to the album. But, I’ll get back to the songs. There are two other tracks on the CD that caught my attention. Those songs would be track eight, “Hold My Heart (Part Two),” and track twelve, “Hold My Heart (Part One).” These
songs are a bit more slow-paced but just as good as the other tracks. The vocals of Matt Shelton stand out in a nice way on both, with his voice fitting the music and also holding depth. Those songs, plus the others, really pull the CD together.
For a band that hasn’t been around for very long, Letter Kills seems to be doing great. I will definitely be awaiting their follow-up release, and I will be expecting nothing short of exceptional. If you don’t have it yet, I recommend that you go get The Bridge! One thing’s for sure - you’ll be missing out if you don’t!
