NEWEST STUFF

Jimmy Eat World
Futures
Jimmy Eat World with Futures
Interscope Records
Release Date:  October 19, 2004

After a three year waiting period, the new Jimmy Eat World album is finally here.   With all the anticipation and hype it Jimmy Eat World Livehas revived, it’s hard not to think that it could never live up to fan expectations.   Whether or not this is true is up for debate.

Futures is by no means perfect, nor is it the Arizona based band’s best work.   It is, however, the perfect album for them to release at this point in time.   If features a combination of radio friendly songs like “Pain” and “Work” that are reminiscent of 2001’s Jimmy Eat World (Bleed America), as well as more tracks such as “Drugs or Me” and “Polaris” that are closer to the classic Clarity.   This album is just what they needed to overcome the possible one-hit-wonder status that came along with the huge mainstream success of “The Middle” and push them on to something more.

The hyper-melodic “Pain” is the first single off the album, receiving play from MTV, MTV2, as well as alternative radio Jimmy Eat Worldstations around the country.   The song is catchy, energetic, and one of the worst tracks on the album.   It’s not that it’s a horrible song.   While it may not have the potential to become as large of a hit as “The Middle,” it is sure to be a minor-hit.   The problem with the song is that it is a poor example of what the band is capable of and the rest of the album completely surpasses it.

On the other hand, one of the best tracks of the album is “Drugs or Me.”   It follows “Pain,” led in by soft distortion and piano.   The melodic sounds are the perfect background for the heart wrenching lyrics.   With lines like “I wish that you could see this face in front of me/You’re sorry, you swear it: you’re done/But I can’t tell you from Jimmy Eat World Promo Shotthe drugs” it’s nearly impossible not to get drawn into the emotion of the song.

Along with songs like “Polaris” and my personal favorite, “Night Drive,” fans are reminded of the genius and beauty that they fell in love with on Clarity, and are given a glimpse of what is to come.   Whether you’ve been a fan of Jimmy Eat World since the beginning ten years ago or you had never heard of them until “The Middle” was on TRL, you won’t be disappointed with Futures

Available in both standard and deluxe version (including a second disk featuring demos of all 11 tracks).
