Hazen Street
Hazen Street
Hazen Street's Self-Titled Debut
Sony Records
Release Date:  July 20, 2004

Side projects have been around forever; bands like The Fire Theft, The Postal Service, and Reggie and Full Effect have Hazen Street Promo Shotbeen just a few of the side projects we will never forget.  However, never has a side project had this many big names in it.  With an all star line-up featuring band members from the Cromags, Box Car Racer, and H20 - how could you possibly go wrong?

Dude, I don’t know but they totally bombed this album (Totally had you there didn’t I).  The album isn’t totally bad, it does, however, have its ups and downs.  Their image makes the band look likeHazen Street Live a Limp Bizkit cover band without the red hats and when I first heard the first song, I really thought it was a joke.  Then, the second song sunk it to an even lower level.  Their single “Fool the World” is ridiculous, with pop-punk melodies and harsh hardcore drum patterns.  It's not too bad, but it falls short when mixed with lyrics like “I’ve see jail bars/not for long/but long enough to write this song.”  After the first two songs the album takes off.  The third song has a killer intro, it is a bit harder, and works really well with their unique formula.  The rest of the album has a good beat to it, with a somewhat poppy tone it in the background.  The lyrics for the whole album aren’t written very well, but the music is put together great.  Hazen Hazen Street LiveStreet has combined poppy beat tempos with hardcore break downs and a twist of gangsta rap.

At first I thought "are these guys really trying to bring thug rock back?"  However, the album does have a unique feeling to it.  But if you looking for rap then my suggestion is to stick with Atmosphere, dogg.  These guys do have a pretty original sound that takes characteristics from each of the genres.  I guess the only way to describe Hazen St. would be Everlast, but much more talented.
