Funeral for A Friend
Casually Dressed & Deep In Conversation

Ferret Records
Release Date: July 13, 2004
Britain’s Funeral For a Friend used to be its best-kept secret, but lately this quintet has been bursting into the American mainstream, leaving Australia like WTF? Mate. I saw Funeral For a Friend at New Jersey’s Skate and Surf, and I have never seen a crowd get that violent in short amount of time. The vocals of front man Matt Davies and his brutal band members were simply remarkable live. Casually Dressed & Deep in Conversation is quintet’s re-release on Ferret Records, and has some of the most amazing artwork I have ever seen. The artwork is about as abstract as the music you are about to listen to.
The album has an amazing energy from the first song until the end. This album has various songs from some of their previous releases, such as "Escape Artists Never Die” from their Seven Ways to Scream Your Name EP. My favorite song on the album would be “Red is New Black” which displays a perfect balance between their harsh background and impressive usage in vocal techniques. The album has much of the same tone until you reach the tenth song entitled “Your Revolution is a Joke.” This song is incredibly sad with a dreary theme to it, and chilling lyrics like “Purpose buried everyday and lies that lead you to the grave.”
There was not one song on the album that I did not like. The outstanding vocals of Davies are the icing on the cake to complex wall of sound that is Funeral for a Friend. Funeral for a Friend has an astonishing trademark sound that is like no other, with traces of punk, metal, and hardcore, all laid out on a melodic canvas. It’s almost like Jackson Pollock on CD. This quintet has created a perfect balance between hardcore and pop-punk that must not be ignored. If you like Finch, the Used, or From Autumn to Ashes then Casually Dressed & Deep in Conversation is a must have.
