From Autumn to Ashes
The Fiction We Live

Vagrant Records
Release Date: September 9, 2003
From Autumn to Ashes used to leave a bad taste in my mouth. I was not a huge fan of their first disc, Too Bad You're Beautiful. It was mediocre hard-core, but had very strong lyrical content. So, when my manager got a free promo of The Fiction We Live, I almost passed it up. I'm wicked glad I took it. Never in my life has a sophomore effort blown me away like this one.
Now, we all know how un-hip it is to have a drummer that sings. However, a drummer that adds intense screaming is awesome. FATA also has a front man singer who provides most of the vocal brilliance on this disc. The opening song, "The After Dinner Payback," is very dark and a very abrasive beginning to the album. Said song also graced the Freddy vs. Jason soundtrack. This album thrashes through reality spitting lyrical knives to the masses. Well...at least until...the seventh track on the album, "Autumn's Monologue."
Lyric sample: "Oh, why can't I be what you need? A new improved version of me. But, I'm nothing so good, no. I'm nothing... Just bones. A lonely ghost burning down songs, of violence, of love and of sorrow."
Oh my God! And that's not even the best part of it all. The vocals are actually supplied by a girl. That's right, the guest vocals provided on this track are compliments of Melanie Wills. If you think that is not as heartfelt as it gets, the track title is an acoustic rebuttal to Autumn's request. The whole disc builds a sense of bad timing and calls for us to all beware of the double lives that we all live.
In conclusion, Long Island has done it again. FATA is a band that I would keep my eye on. They have made an epic disc and they are only getting better. Get in your car, drive to the nearest store that carries Vagrant discs, and buy three of them. One for you, one for your best friend, and one to have when yours wears out from overplaying.
