Count The Stars
Never Be Taken Alive

Victory Records
Release Date: February 25, 2003
I counted down the days until this release. AP had reviewed it early and gave it a disappointing deuce. That was highway robbery.
Count The Stars delivers a blunt pop-punk album with enough catchy lines to cover live journals from coast to coast. Thirteen songs have never been so catchy before. The CD opens with “Brand New Skin,” a super bitter song depicting someone trying to be what they are not and the people around them giving up. That’s right, they are not all love songs.
“Taking it All Back” was the single. I like this song for the in-your-face slams towards one’s weak characteristics. This is a slap in the face to girls or guys that never get around to saying what they feel until it is too late. “Taking it all back, that’s every promise I made, for every word that you could never get the nerve to say,” is the perfect chorus for this hit.
My personal favorite is “First Time.” This was actually the first song I heard from the album. I really like the anthem feel
of the song, raving about being on your own, and fighting to breathe. Being on Victory, one would suspect a hard hitting, hard-core album. However, with recent signings, Victory is showing a poppier, softer, politer side, and Count the Stars is a shining example of this.
“All Good Things” is the last track, and by far the most heartfelt. The best line is “I can’t explain, what made me stay, I fall into the same mistakes, like all good things, they never last, the past is past.” This CD is incredibly personal. Everyone can relate at least one song to someone they know.
My overall favorite part of this release is the artwork. The fold-out sleeve is filled with random tour photos and pictures of the band being themselves. No stylists, just boys being boys. I am all too tired of opening sleeves to see the cliché abstract art and emo, “we’re too cool to look at the camera,” pictures. This is just a testament to how real these guys are. This is a good disc. You will enjoy the mood swings of being in love, having a best friend, and being pissed off all in one.
