The first thing that comes to my mind when I think of Breaking Benjamin is hard rock music that I can rock out to, not catchy pop choruses. On their debut album, Saturate, song after song was filled with screams and pure adrenaline. We Are Not Alone has the same familiar Breaking Benjamin sound, but it is a slightly different sound coming from a band that began to taste fame when they toured with Godsmack in promotion for their debut album.
With the first single, “Cold,” starting off the album, any fan of the band would expect an album with songs similar to that song. Well, that is not the case with this album.
Although the band has grown over the few years since their last album, songs on the record have original, heavy lyrics. The next track, “Simple Design,” begins with classic Breaking Benjamin guitar, as do most others. Once hitting “Forget It”, a soft sound comes out although it does not last long. The next few songs are hard songs to rock out to, but the last track “Rain” is a
slow song, but I think it has some of the heaviest, honest lyrics such as, “Take a photograph/ It’ll be the last/ Not a dollar or a crowd could ever keep me here," which are the opening lyrics.
Basically, this album is no doubt, a Breaking Benjamin album, but it is very obvious, especially in “Rain,” that the band has grown along with its members. They are able to express their feelings through different sounds and it is really a great sophomore album. Rather than having all hard songs, the experiment with acoustic guitars is amazing. Anyone that liked Saturate should appreciate We Are Not Alone just as much.
