Brand New
Your Favorite Weapon

Triple Crown Records
Released: October 9, 2001
I think emo has finally found its princes. Long Island's folklore of DIY, hard-core, and punk have finally resonated together and from this musical melting pot we are served a delicious dish known as created Brand New. Following a tour of broken vans and insanely charismatic live shows, Your Favorite Weapon was created. Never have 12 songs meant more to a movement since the Ramones. OK, that might have been a step too far. But, at least you can see that I'm totally sold on them.
Your Favorite Weapon starts weak with the ghetto version of "The Shower Scene." For a better version, check out the compilation disc, From Brooklyn With Love. Enough on that. "Jude Law and a Semester Abroad" was the first single that dropped off of this disc, almost a year after it was released. Brand New took a while to catch on and then they were huge in like a minute. "Jude Law..." is the meanest break up song to ever be sang by an angelic little Long Island kid. "I hope the next boy that you kiss has something terribly contagious on his lips." Ooh, that stings. Although "Jude Law..." was the single, Brand New has become infamous for their bitter hate anthem "Seventy Times Seven." Here is the scoop, the real story, the short version. Jesse (Brand New), and John (Taking Back Sunday), had a falling out over a girl. Jesse left TBS where he played bass, wrote "Seventy..." and it was cause for much controversy. Then, John and TBS wrote "There's No I in Team." quoting lyrics from BN and taking the defensive side of things. There, now get over it.
Other than bitterness, there are some awesome heart felt moments. "And I'm sick of your tattoos and the way you always criticize the Smiths." No band ever becomes great without paying homage to those that rocked before them. I admit, I listened to this disc so much that the bastard cracked in half. Listen to this one BEFORE their second effort, Deja Entendu.
