Brand New
Deja Entendu

Razor & Tie Records
June 17, 2003
After being a Brand New fan for two years and being devoted to their debut album, Your Favorite Weapon, I was surprised to hear the second disc. Following the first listen, I damned them and called the disc a disappointment. After the second listen, I realized that Deja Entendu was a work of art more than a crowd pleaser.
Brand New took some cues from Radiohead and Sigur Ros and explored new sounds, textures, and techniques. The
result, a wonderful collection of emotions ranging from depression and self doubt to arrogance and self-indulgence on over to the wonderful feelings of being taken advantage of to the illness of a loved one. Don't worry, it's not as depressing as it sounds - unless you want it to...
There is no easy way to explain how this disc makes people feel. Everyone has a different favorite line in a different song. But most agree, Brand New made one hell of a disc. My personal favorite is "I will lie awake, and lie for fun, and fake the way I hold you. May you fall for every empty word I say." Damn, that's rad. Another fan favorite goes "Is this how a toy feels, when its batteries run out," Ouch, that hurts. The emotion embedded in these lyrics is so strong, you can smell it with a stuffy nose.
I love this album and strongly suggest that you check it out. If you are a true music fan, then heed my word: Get the first disc, then see the progression to the second. You will be totally amazed at the transition - you will not be disappointed.
