The Bouncing Souls with Anchors Aweigh
Epitaph Records
Release Date: August 26, 2003

The Bouncing Souls return with their anticipated follow-up to 2001’s How I Spent My Summer Vacation, Anchors Aweigh. I was excited about this CD even before I bought it and I wasn’t disappointed.

The Bouncing SoulsAnchors Aweigh is one of those albums that takes a few listens before you really get into it, though I’m sure you will find, that like me, once it grows on you it's difficult to remove from your CD player.  Even the band themselves seem to agree, with this quote appearing on their web site after the album’s release: "Once it's made it's way into your heart, you'll be saying "fuck you it's the best!"

The album’s first single, "Sing Along Forever," really does make you wanna sing along forever.  There are quite a few standout tracks from the 16 tracks (plus a secret song), but the slower song, "New Day," is a real highlight.  The other standout tracks are "Born Free," "Better Days," and "Highway Kings," but seriously, there is not a bad or even mediocre song on the album.

The band’s bassist, Bryan "Papillon" Kienlen, sings lead vocals on two songs, "Night Train" and "The Day I Turned My Back on You" and he actually has a really good voice.  His voice is a lot rougher than singer Greg Attonito’s trademark voice, which ranges from crooning to howling and most listeners will probably welcome the contrast. The Bouncing Souls

Anchors Aweigh shows the band’s new maturity, lyrically and musically, therefore making the album better rounded than their previous releases.  The lyrics are more personal and at times, heartfelt.  The music is still the same raw sound that we’ve come to recognize, but they have added some slower songs ("Night Train," "I’m From There") and even included strings on "Todd’s Song."

This album will keep old fans happy while probably attracting a whole new audience in the process.  The passion and energy of Anchors Aweigh has certainly elevated the Bouncing Souls to "favorite band status" for me and it may just do the same for you.
