Billy Talent
Billy Talent Self-Titled Album
Atlantic Records
Release Date:  September 16, 2003

If you live in Australia like me, chances are you never would have heard of Billy Talent.  I first came across them after a Billy Talent Promo ShotCanadian friend recommended them to me.  I downloaded their song "Try Honesty" and instantly fell in love with them, as that song reminded me a little bit of Australia’s The Living End.  Since you can’t get the CD in Australia, I had to wait until I was in America at the Warped Tour, but the wait was well worth it.

Billy Talent sound very fresh and new and it is nice to hear from a new band that is not trying to break into the over-saturated emo/pop-punk genre.  The band certainly has their own distinct style, which could probably best be described as a mix of punk and rock and roll.  Another thing that probably gives Billy Talent a more unique sound is theirBilly Talent Live singer, Benjamin Kowalewicz, who's vocals range from nasal whining to screaming, all while having an awesome singing voice.  The rest of the band provides backing vocals on most of the songs, which sounds really good.

From the opening line of the opening song on the CD, "This Is How It Goes," I just knew I was going to love the whole CD, and I was right.  Many of you may have already heard "Try Honesty" and "The Ex," as they are both singles from the album and both have videos.   All the songs are just as good, if not better than those two songs.  If I named the best songs on the album, I would probably have to say nearly Billy Talent Liveevery song.

Billy Talent’s song topics range from a cheating girlfriend ("The Ex"), family issues ("River Below," "Try Honesty,"), and prostitution ("Standing in the Rain").  However, the most touching song on the album (and a bit of a tearjerker) is "Nothing To Lose," which is about bullying.  All the songs touch on fairly serious subjects.

I don’t really know what else I can say except:  GET THIS ALBUM!!!  It caught me off guard because it totally blew me away!  I think we will definitely see big things from this band if their debut is anything to go by.  This is definitely an album to jump around to, so turn it up loud.

XROXX Album Rating:  XXXXX (5 X's out of a possible 5)
