Autopilot Off Make a Sound
Island Records Release Date: April 13, 2004
When you hear the words “autopilot off” what do you think of? Freedom? Being in control? Maybe even a change from the norm? Well, I picked up Autopilot Off’s first full-length album, Make A Sound, with just those thoughts in mind. As I grabbed the album, the cover immediately caught my eye. The font and album art seemed very familiar, almost even trite. This made me start to think that maybe they were just your typical punk-pop band from Orange County.
But a fter listening to the CD, I banished those thoughts from my mind. I realized that maybe they did have a different kind of tune to them. Even though they are commonly compared to bands like Count The Stars, Fall Out Boy, and The Movielife, they seemed very unique compared to them. In my opinion, it sounded like Chris Johnson (lead vocalist) had a more masculine approach to his singing than most bands in that particular genre do now a days.
The songs on this album are very well written. All the songs achieve the same kind of idea. They all have deep, emotional lyrics, and a good beat that will keep you tapping your feet along.
The first song titled “Make a Sound” is an excellent intro to the CD. It gives you a great feel of what the rest of the CD sounds like. At first, it gives you that thought that they are just your average band, but once you get into the chorus of the song, you realize this band is anything but typical.
One of m y favorite songs on the album is “I Know You’re Waiting.” This song starts off slow and calm. And in about 90 seconds that all changes, leaving you in a strong, catchy, punk ballad.
“The 12th Day” was a song written about the attacks on September 11. The songs lyrics truly depict the feelings of that day, and have a very different approach to it.
The CD leaves you hanging on, with it’s final song “The Cicada's Song.” It is a change from the rest of the CD because it feels as if it’s missing something that the rest of the songs had. This makes you linger for more. And hopefully there will be more.
The songs on this album will get stuck in your head, whether you like the album or not. Guaranteed. I recommend this CD for anyone, either a long time fan of Autopilot Off or just someone looking for something not so
