NEWEST STUFF

Atreyu
The Curse (Limited Edition)
 Atreyu with The Curse
Victory Records
Release Date: June 29, 2004

What sounds like a softer approach to Atreyu’s music, may be what I would consider a maturing in their sound.  The Atreyu Livealbum starts out with what sounds like what you would hear in a mental facility out of the old black and white movies (I’ll be taken out back and shot for saying that.).   Don’t let that fool you though, as soon as the second track starts it’s double bass, guitar licks like crazy and banshee screams and low bellows from the band all at once.  Something to get the kids riled up and ready to make mayhem.  This being album being Atreyu's 3rd release,  I must say they found what direction they are going musically.  Every track just explodes with insane guitar riffs and intense vocals.

People who have listened to Atreyu once always think it's just screams, growls, andAtreyu Live something that doesn’t sound like words.  That may be, but if you take the chance to listen to them more you’d find that most of the songs do in fact have coherent vocals, mixed in with the growls and banshee screams.  I expected this from what I may think to be a most talented hardcore band out there.  All the songs are fast paced and intense to get anyone who listens to it pumped up, but even with that there is one track that displays the intricacies of the band’s musicianship, showing that they know how to play and soften the tone and mood of any moment.  Atreyu does it so well to go from “The Remembrance Ballad,” which sounds like a rock ballad to the song, “An Interlude.”  The way they did “An Interlude” has a more passionate feeling of a calm and relaxing personality, but doesn’t sound out of place.  After that song we hit right back up to speed, with “Corseting” all the way to the end of the CD with Jon Bon Jovi’s song “You Give Love a Bad Name.”  On the other versions of their album, none of them limited editions, the only thing that seems to be missing is the cover song of Jon Bon Jovi’s “You Give Love a Bad Name.”

If anyone is looking for a CD to get pumped up for the big game, for a race, or just to work to, Atreyu’s The Curse is for you.  I do say this though, this isn’t for the faint of heart or pregnant mothers who don’t like mosh pits in their wombs.
