Never Take Friendship Personal
Anberlin with Never Take Friendship Personal
Tooth and Nail Records
Release Date: February 1, 2005

Anberlin first displayed their talents with their Tooth & Nail Records debut, Blueprints for the Black Market.  Their second Anberlin Promo Shottime around, they’re out to reel you in, yet again, with their catchy riffs and a more melodic attempt at making a mark in the music world.  From upbeat and happy tunes to slower, more tranquil songs, Never Take Friendship Personal does just that.

I’ve found that fans of Fall Out Boy, Spitalfield, and Thursday alike listen to and enjoy Anberlin.  Though it can’t be denied that their music has a pop-punk sound, their music also has its emo moments, too.  It’s nice that a band can display the energy and optimism of pop-punk and then come back and hit you with something relaxed and low-key.  The cool thing about this CD is the fact that each song will remind you of something different.  Different vibes within each track set you up for something you won’t get sick of after two times on repeat.  If you don’t like the sound of that, then don’t worry.  Even though every song displays something slightly different, they each go together nicely on the CD.Anberlin Live

The opening song on Never Take Friendship Personal is also the title track.  It sports a catchy chorus and a nice, guitar-filled introduction.  What else does this track offer?  You guessed it – a scream or two.  “Paperthin Hymn” is the second song on the CD and leads into a very lively third song called “Stationary Stationery.”  Stephen Christian (vocals) sings out the chorus, “I thought you said that you'd come find me/I thought you said you'd be home by now/I heard you sang that you'd come back here/So I wrote to remind you somehow.”  It’s one of my favorite songs on the album.

Anberlin Promo Shot“(The Symphony Of) Blasé” is another good song on the disc because it shows the softer side of Anberlin’s musical talent.  It has lyrics like, “God if you can hear me out alright/Please take these feelings for her inside/My chest hurts when I breathe tonight/It's wasting me away (You're wasting me away)/You're wasting me away,” and is peaceful enough to lull you to sleep...in a good way.  Besides that song, though, the other song that I really enjoy is “Time & Confusion.”  It’s a positive song that will put you in a good mood, which is a characteristic many bands are beginning to lack.

Overall, Never Take Friendship Personal is a nice step-up for Anberlin.  It’s enjoyable, relaxing, refreshing, and skillful all at once.  The band is steadily gaining the ears of music fans across America, and definitely deserves it.  So, when you go to the store to get this CD, let the broken glass sculpture of a person’s head (album cover) guide you to the goodness. It’s money worth spending!
