Release Date:  February 25, 2003

American Hi-FiWith The Art of Losing, American Hi-Fi has managed to make a memorable album which has an intense, adrenalized sound, along with catchy choruses.  If you liked their first album, you’ll definitely like this one.  Most of the tracks make references to hackneyed topics, but still they manage a few decent lyrics.  The band avoids following the Flavour of the Weak formula (although traces are evident in "The Breakup Song"), and deliver an improved, yet still familiar piece of work, enabling them to be taken more seriously.

The title track sets off with a sing-along style and a catchy chorus; Jones sings "Hey ho, let’s go I’m gonna start a riot..." over a captivating drum beat; the song will definitely stay stuck in your head.  "Save Me" is a semi-ballad with some sad verses and is the American Hi-Fi Promo Shottype of song that you won’t get tired of listening to; it's got some good music, which makes up for its simplicity.  Another noteworthy track is "Breakup Song."  It has quick paced rock beats with rather amusing lyrics that tell the story of a relationship gone sour and the guy being more concerned about getting his CD's back then the girl.  “Happy” is the last song on the album and deserves to be played loud, so you American Hi-Fi Promo Shotcan sing along at the top of your lungs.  They are all fairly easy on the ears, but there is just something missing; most of the songs sound familiar on some level, and there is nothing ground-breaking.

Fortunately, they are able to keep the sugar at a tolerable level throughout the whole album.  Nevertheless, American Hi-Fi has the ability to do something with more meaning.  The Art of Losing is good, but hardly amazing; it is memorable in that it shows improvement from their last work, and that the songs stay with you, but what kills them is their triviality.  It is this lack of significance which acts as a hindrance to the enjoyment of the album.  However, if in their next work, they show further growth, they are set to become one of the more outstanding pop-punk bands; they definitely have the talent to do so.
