NEWEST STUFF

Against Me!
As The Eternal Cowboy
Against Me! with As The Eternal Cowboy
Fat Wreck Chords
Release Date:  November 4, 2003

Against Me! is a four-piece band from Gainesville, Florida (home of Less Than Jake) and are one of Fat Wreck’s newest Against Me! Livesignings.  As The Eternal Cowboy is actually their second album, although it is their first on Fat Wreck Chords.  Not knowing much about this band before listening to the album, I had no idea what to expect.  However, I’m glad that I didn’t know what to expect, as this is definitely an album where it is better to have no expectations.

The beginning of the first song, "T.S.R.," sounds more like a Me First and the Gimme Gimme’s song, until it kicks in and then it sounds more like a Dropkick Murphy’s song.  However, you can really tell that this is a band that is certainly not trying to sound like anyone else.  There are so many aspects to their sound; punk, garage rock, folk,Against Me! Live rock’n’roll, blues and country, but putting them all together really seems to work for Against Me!. Overall their music has more of a vintage, old school sound, with raw vocals.

Against Me! LiveAnyone who has heard Rock Against Bush Vol. 1 may remember that Against Me! have a song on there, "Sink, Florida, Sink," which is a slow, acoustic, bluesy kinda track.  This song is included on As The Eternal Cowboy.  While there are a couple of other acoustic songs on the album, if "Sink, Florida, Sink" is the first or only Against Me! song you’ve heard, you may find it a bit misleading as most of their stuff is much heavier.  Standout songs on the album include "Cliché Guevara" and "Slurring the Rhythms."  They even throw in a cleverly titled instrumental track "A Brief Yet Triumphant Intermission," to break up the CD.

It may take a few listens, but I think you will come to appreciate this album and whether you like the music or not you will respect the band for their fast rock tunes, catchy acoustic songs and clever lyrics.  While it probably wasn’t a conscious effort on their behalf, Against Me! has set themselves apart from other new bands with their unique sound.  They’ve victoriously emerged with their own signature style, something that is hard to do these days with so many bands out there.  Definitely worth a second listen.
