A Thorn For Every Heart
Things Aren’t So Beautiful Now

Kickball Records
Release Date: October 19, 2004
If a pill could be prescribed for music, Thorazine would be the doctor’s order for A Thorn For Every Heart’s Kickball
Records release Things Aren’t So Beautiful Now. The meds wouldn’t be for the band’s lyrical content, but rather for the schizophrenic musical and vocal textures.
A Thorn For Every Heart have built their foundation on complex textures that are strong and straightforward. Each song has a structure that is reminiscent of classic compositions by Bach or Mozart, even though the band doesn’t boast this feature. High pitched sung vocals and eye-bulging screams act as both melodies and harmonies. These aspects can best be seen on songs like “Next of Kin” and “99 With an Anchor.”
It’s not just vocal textures that A Thorn For Every Heart are good at creating, it’s musical complexity as well. At times airy guitar riffs are harmonized by blatant guitar shredding that could get any kid moshing at any time. The drums are extremely energetic and illustrate the band’s metal roots. On “The Prediction,” it’s the drums that act as the main melody, while the guitars are almost like an added bonus.
A Thorn For Every Heart can easily be compared to bands like Senses Fail and Thrice and they’re not afraid to be in those shoes. Are they just another band trying to cash in on the screamo revolution? It’s possible, but Things Aren’t So Beautiful Now is a strong record, so what’s it matter anyway?
