A Static Lullaby
Faso Latido

Released: April 5, 2005
Columbia Records
At long last it has happened. One of our own beloved indie rock bands has signed to a major label without selling out.
After departing from the Jersey-based Ferret Records, the band sat down to write an album of ideas. Changing from their usual style of writing from experience and to writing about something. Faso Latido is a mocking tale of life in the limelight.
I was delighted by the more lyrical nature of this disc. I never got into music that had so much screaming that the words were totally lost. “Smooth Modulator” is the first song on the album with words and they are comprehensible. That’s an improvement on a lot of music these days. The first single, “Stand Up,” is metaphorically sound. I
found myself listening so hard that I knew the words to the chorus the second time I listened.
“Calmer Than You Are” is the middle child of the disc. Loud, abrasive, and confusing; this is the song you want to listen to in your car with the windows down and on full blast, just to hear it as loud as you can stand it. It’s nothing you can explain, you just
want to. The pacing on the CD is a little different. From screaming to “Godbless You (God Damnit)” which borders on being a ballad. At first I was unsure if I could focus long enough without losing interest, but after another listen, I was over that. Overall, it was an enjoyable listening experience.
If the music isn’t enough, buy it for the song titles. “Half Man, Half Shark; Equals One Complete Gentleman” is my personal favorite, and after many repeats of the song I am fairly certain it has nothing to do with the words or an on-going theme. Hence, this is why I love it. Anyone who likes Finch or Eighteen Visions would really dig this CD. Still not convinced that Faso Latido is worth your time? Try to catch A Static Lullaby live and you will change your mind.
