Hold On, It's Gonna Be A Bumpy Ride
My favorite band in the world is Brand New. That is pretty much a given. However, there are almost ten bands that I consider myself a super fan for. A super fan is someone that has seen a band more than six times and in at least two states. I followed bands like The Reunion Show, Count The Stars, Plain White Ts, Showoff, Recover, and of course Brand New. It was my goal to see them once every two months and to just enjoy those moments while embellishing the music. Then, at the beginning of the summer, I learned about the downside of being a super fan. Your band may break up.
The first break up to affect my circle of friends was Taking Back Sunday. In late May, I started to hear rumors that the kings of indie pop, after selling 500,000+ albums on Victory records, were breaking it up. Being a true fan, I demonstrated an amazing effort of denial. There was no way... Way. In June, the more official word of break up came out, and I accepted it. Not willingly mind you, but I did. That being said, I kind of brushed it off, after all, I still had the rest of my bands. My friend, J, was completely devastated. He was more of a super fan that I allowed myself to be. He had TBS song lyrics tattooed on his forearm. After TBS regrouped, lost and gained members, and jaunted back on tour, I questioned J on the new TBS. His response was depressing. He said he was done with them and that they were not the same, or comparable, and that they should change their name, and let TBS die. I thought his reaction was kind of funny, I admit. Had I only known...
My friends and I drove out to Chicago to see the Reunion Show and a few other bands play a quaint little venue. Well, by the time we got there, the venue was at capacity, and bursting at the seams. Kids were sitting outside of the door trying to catch a stray note on the summer breeze. We were one of these unfortunate souls. It was beginning to rain, so we retreated to the car. As we got in, Austin said "dude, don't worry, we'll see 'em soon enough." Famous last words. Not nearly a month later, I received an e-mail from the mailing list of said band. The Reunion Show has broken up, and decided to pursue other projects. You have got to be fucking kidding me!!! I cried, like, 15 tears. However, Austin took it the hardest. He completely worshiped the singer / moog player. His exact words were that "it feels like my parents just broke up, but like, if I really liked my parents." We went into mourning. Our away messages were wrath with song lyrics, and personal confessions of loss, and encouragement for people to never forget a band they probably never heard of. It even got to the point that we wore black and only TRS T-shirts. Needless to say, I was no longer laughing at people who were upset when their fave band broke up. It sucks.
The next complete cock in the face shock to the punk rock / emo world was the demise of Drive Thru's Long Island powerhouse, the Movielife. I personally was not affected by this, however, I did have a fascinating IM conversation with their biggest fan... Check it out:
Jayne: I have a random request... I am writing this article for a web site about bands breaking up... I was wondering if you could give me some thoughts on the Movielife thing
Justin: LOL DAMN IT!
Justin: I am very touchy on that! lol
Justin: sure what do you want to know?
Jayne: I just want to know... coming from the super fan ...how it has affected you in the grand scheme of things?
Justin: I don't know really, I am sad just really bummed out about it but ya know shit happens and I just hope that they will get back together or start new side projects that will kick ass
Jayne: you don't regret like the tattoos or any of it?
Justin: oh fuck no!
Justin: they are still my fav band of all time
Jayne: can I ask you a few more things?
Justin: and I the tats are just a memory for
Justin: that time in my life
Justin: sure
Jayne: were you into TBS enough to give a fuck about their new members, or any of that? or is no big to you?
Justin: I like their new members
Justin: personally I think they sound better with them
Jayne: have you seen them live?
Justin: yeah with the old and new
Jayne: and you like the new better?
Justin: a little bit
Justin: they sound a lot better musically in my opinion
Jayne: cool.
Justin: yeah yeah yeah
Jayne: hahah. thanks for cooperating
Justin: no problemo!
Jayne: anything else you wanna add? any new bands I should watch out for?
Justin: uummmmm.....
Justin: hidden in plain view, stars hide fire, jamison parker, the bled
Jayne: stars hide fire... I've heard of them...
Jayne: thanks for your help... do you have any pics of the car or tattoos?
Justin: no I took the sticker off my car and the only people who have a picture of my car is the Movielife, but no pics of the tats
Jayne: that is real sad... that would have been awesome...
Justin: yeah
Justin: I'm sorry
Jayne: don't be
Justin: coo coo
Jayne: rawk
That was that. Justin did have a rear window sticker that said the Movielife. Before he became friends with one of my friends, we called him the Movielife kid.
The final straw that pushed me to write this was the recent crumbling of Count The Stars. I saw them in November and then on the 5th of December, they announce their split. Give me a freaking break. I really love their music and they were seriously the nicest guys. I am still in shock and I don't think it has really hit just yet. I hope for the best for all of them. It's just really sad that there is a possibility that I will not get to see them ever again. They were a hell of a live band.
All of this being said, there is some silver lining. Some of the members of bands that break up move onto other musical projects and sometimes surpass their roots. Others still tour as techs, guests, or managers, keeping them alive in the scene. The only thing I have to say is enjoy bands while you can and see them live as much as possible. Enjoy their music even after they are gone. Just because they are not a band does not mean they did not make amazing music. Keep rawk alive!!!!!
