Artsie Fartsie

Dear Jayne,
Over the years I've seen many different T-shirt designs, for every band you could ever imagine...(my personal favorite being the red "I'm such an asshole" Stabbing Westward T-shirt w/ the cross on it). What do you think makes a great T-shirt? The design, what it says (obviously the band name is a given), but do people really care about the text? Or is it the images and art? What is the best T-shirt you have ever seen, and what made it that way?

Hey Artsie,
I think a great shirt is defined by the art. Shirts that sell are one of two things, great art or funny/deep phrases. The newest Brand New shirts are a great example of both. The art is important to them. They have been known for their catchy T-shirt phrases. From “Brand New wants you dead” to “Brand Nizzle,” they know how to sell merch.
Another classic is Glassjaw’s “Guns don't kill people, Glassjaw kills people,” which is probably the best shirt I have ever seen. Swag is complicated like that. Completely hit or miss. But, there are always those posers who will buy anything and they deserve to buy dumb merch and look stupid.
Vendetta Red is also a band who monopolizes imagery, mainly gory outrageous imagery, but it sells. There is also the dangerous line of politics that a merch company can walk. Fat Mike of NOFX has been marketing the “not my president” shirt for the last year with great reception from both press and fans. But, he has also pissed people off in the process.
Merch, especially shirts, is supposed to be artsie and show some of the band’s personality. That’s why kids buy it. The only thing I would avoid would be charging $20 (hint, hint Dashboard) for a shirt or being ultra cheesy and putting the tour on the back. Honestly now, you aren't DMB, don’t act like it. Thanks for writing!
