2004: The Year in CD Reviews
January 16, 2005
December of last year. It seems miles away, literally. I was just starting off in the XROXX family, and I felt like the
adopted kid no one liked. Now, I am staff, the E-zine Manager none the less. From Chicago to Boston, I lived the rock lifestyle all 365 days of 2004. It hasn’t all been awesome, but it’s all been a trip. This is going to get personal, can you handle it?
I made specific goals for myself. I wanted to meet Andrew W.K, mainly because his music and live show makes me feel alive. On August 20, also known as my 22nd birthday, I met him. He’s totally a nice guy and not smelly at all. I met and befriended the infamous Brian Ewing. I have been a fan of his posters for about a year. I also have him to thank for
introducing me to other artists to further my Artist of the Month project. He’s a totally rad dude too. Austin and I interviewed Sugarcult, which in our world, was like meeting the President, if we liked the President at all. I paid money for shows I didn’t really want to go to, and even got towed once which set Austin back $140. On the bright side though, we got into a lot of shows we wanted to attend. The view from the photo pit is amazing. That’s all I have to say. And, to end the year in rock, my traveling buddies and I all got to meet (and blow off) people in our favorite bands on the Warped Tour. Mishaps, road rage, mini vans with no radios, and a Dane Cook CD later, the year in rock...Well, it rocked.
I fell in love. I have yet to admit this to anyone I know. Let me explain. We met on the phone. I was gunning for his super-fine roommate and one night, we started talking. He let my rad-tad group of friends crash at his pad, I just happened to land in his bed (not what you think). We were definitely not the ideal match. Until he met me, he didn’t know who Brand New was (that is really important to someone as shallow as me). This is how I fell. He made an effort. He downloaded some Brand New; he texted me lyrics; he was there to talk to at night when I got off of work. But, there is no room in emo for love, only break-ps. So, we broke up. It was the worst thing that happened to me...t week at least. But seriously, that totally sucked. I guess I learned my lesson.
Meet Bradley. Mullet wearing, camo clad fourteen year old boy (my cousin really). We invited Brad to Skate and Surf
with us, and soon after, he became our road worthy travel buddy. New Jersey and Milwaukee all in one year. He picked out Taking Back Sunday and Brand New CD's on his own. He is a huge fan of Blink 182, like the old awesome stuff. I am really proud of him. Between Yellowcard and MxPx, he grew a Mohawk and tossed the mullet. Bradley is a great protégé. We’re glad to have him in the posse. “No important place to go, let’s go to the punk rock show!”
I got a new job. After Barnes and Noble fucked me around for two years, I took a job at a video game store. Within three months, I became assistant manager, and will be either taking over my store, or a Chicago store in the near future. It’s amazing what can happen when you work for people and a company that has faith in their employees.
On to the best of:
Best CD's: Straylight Run – Self-Titled
Taking Back Sunday – Where You Want to Be
The Starting Line – Acoustic EP
Army of Freshmen – Beg, Borrow, Steal
Best DVD's: Napoleon Dynamite
Garden State
Something Corporate – Live at the Ventura Theater

I want next year to be bigger and better. Go on tour, have my heart broken again, move to Chicago, and make it to the West Coast. 2005 is so gonna be my bitch.
