XROXX BAND OF THE MONTH
MAY 2004

I was trying to look for an appropriate photo to put at the top of this srticle and just couldn't find one that fit. Then I
looked at the bottom of the main page of Sunspot's website and found what I thought was perfect. That's the picture that you see above. Sunspot, a Madison, Wisconsin band, is one of the hardest working, most professional bands I know or have even heard of. They're constantly on the road coming to small clubs near you. Now, when I say professional, many of you may be turned off because you don't think a band can be professional yet rock and have fun. If you're a believer in that philosophy, it will come to an end when you see Sunspot.
I don't even remember how long I've known this three-piece rock band but it goes back quite a while. I used to book them at the club I work for in Milwaukee. After the show, myself and Scott Hanson would invite them upstairs to Scott's apartment for hours of drinking and Mario Kart! I usually got my ass whooped but I made sure the Bowser mobile, which could be a stunt double for my vehicle, did some damage. They're a hard-working group who truly goes by the motto, "Work hard, play hard." They're going to rock you off you ass during a show and then come join you for a bunch of brews at the bar afterwards.
Sunspot shows that hard work does pay off. These guys earned XROXX Band of the Month status because they received two industry awards in Wisconsin in April. The first came from the Madison Area Music Awards (MAMA), where they most recent album, Loser of the Year, received best rock album. They followed that up with an award from the Wisconsin Area Music Industry (WAMI) for Best Rock/Alternative Group of the Year. In addition, the WAMI people asked them to perform at the show and they blew the roof off the place with their performance of "Prozac Girl." I was standing next to one of the main entertainment bookers in Wisconsin at the time and he was yelling, "This song rocks" as we were getting trashed in the Green
Room (ah, the privileges we get here at XROXX!).
Sunspot constantly promotes themselves. I've never run into them when they don't have Sunspot promotional material on them. These guys and one lady (a drummer at that, how awesome!) probably don't go into the restroom without something on them! That's just the way they are. They're doing something they love and something they want to succeed at and they're not going to stop until that happens. They are generally good people and
get along with each other and everyone I've ever talked to says the same thing.
They don't limit their touring to Wisconsin, Minnesota and Illinois like so many other bands in their area. You may see them on a bill in Texas, Massachusetts, or even California. Who knows what's next? If these guys are in your area, you gotta give them a listen. Since no one else is willing to do it, I think it's about time someone got some balls and said what these guys are, so i'm going to take that opportunity. Sunspot is the hardest working band in Wisconsin. Now go out and give them a listen and get hooked!
