NEWEST STUFF

XROXX Band of the Month

JULY 2004

alter EGO

alter EGO

When we received a package from alter EGO, based in Eugene, Oregon, I threw it in the CD player just like any other album.  Usually I'll visit the band's website while they're playing.  That's when things got interesting.  The first thing I alter EGO Goofing Aroundsee on their site is information about a Japan tour.  I was intrigued so I continued listening and surfing.  I kept being more and more amazed and knew I had found our next XROXX Band of the Month.  Not only do they play great music but they seem to have a sense of humor much like my alter ego (which I write this column under - it's my porn name in case you were wondering).

alter EGO's website is cool, but it doesn't provide you with a whole ton of information.  I mean there are great tidbits, alter EGO such as those about Tony.  Tony sings and plays guitar and the skinflute.  He lists his superpower as "Gas."  Ahhh...A bio I might write for myself if I had any musical talents.  When I play skin flute, the flute tends to, shall we say, run out of music rather quickly.  Then there is Nao who lists his top favorite food as a Taco Bell Grilled Stuft Burrito, which is high on my list as well.  I would have to rank the classic bean burrito and the 7-layer burrito, minus the guacamole (I know, I'm bad), just ahead of it (as long as it's a steak grilled stuft burrito!).

For all of this great insight into the guys, there is a lack of quality photos, although they do have some neat buddy icons and wallpapers that you can download.  Other than that, the site is quite a bit of flash.  It's kind of like Bill Clinton's book.  You want to read it, but then you find out that after you take away the pictures, it's only about 100 pages (at least that's what I've heard).  They do have a rather lively message board, however.

alter EGO with the 1992 So. Cal. Pop-Rock Explosion E.P.The band itself is awesome.  They've put out eight albums since 2000, including their June 2004 release, the 1992 So. Cal. Pop-Rock Explosion E.P., which is an enhanced CD. In July 2003, the band released Station! in the United States.  They are releasing a Japanese version of the CD next month to coincide with their Japanese tour.  "Webcam Grrl," which is on both of the Station! releases is an awesome track; one of the best I've heard all year.  I instantly fell in love with it and it's available via download from their website!  The track is currently playing in heavy rotation on XROXX Radio.

The band was unavailable for comment because they just began a West Coast Tour.  They are playing around 26 shows in 34 days, covering four states.  They finish this West Coast Tour on July 25th and play their first show in Japan on July 30th.  They will be in Japan through August and once again will play out a lot.  They have 23 shows in 32 days and will take a day off on August 31st to go to Tokyo Disney Land.  alter EGO Engine Fire

The band has a cool section on their website for their Tour Journal.  The most recent installments talk about the hard luck they had on the start of their West Coast Tour.  An engine fire, a timing belt breaking and running out of gas greeted them as they hit the road.  You need to make sure to keep up with them there.

This band is dedicated, funny and very, very good.  They have some downloadable MP3's so I suggest you check those out and let them know what you think.  Oh, remember to tell them that Dick Sycamore from XROXX sent ya.  Until next month, yer mom.
