BANDS OF THE MONTH

XROXX Band of the Month

OCTOBER 2004

MORE NORTH
More North Live

When Showoff broke up, the scene kids of Chicago were left with a big hole in their heart.  Many bands started popping up out of nowhere, trying to lick their wounds.  Bands like LBC, Split Habit, and Plain White T's crawled out from under the door with a wave of pop.  A band called Starstruck were like the little brothers of the Chicago pop-punk More North Liveexplosion.  Two and a half years later, they regrouped, got make-overs, and became MORE NORTH.  Starstruck had their name out there, they even played my hometown.  But, MORE NORTH really succeeded where Starstruck fell short.

Chicago is not really known as a pop punk mecca, but it should be.  MORE NORTH are out there doing it.  Working jobs, trying to make money, stuggling, but loving every minute of it.  One minute alone with any of the guys is refreshing.  No label backing bullshit, just balls to the wall DIY.  They really love Chicago too.  Any local band in the area will sing their praise at a moment's notice.  Their brothers, Plain White T's and the Reception, are there in full support at every show the MORE NORTH boys play.  Fall Out Boy are also big fans.  The best thing about an unsigned band is they can be any kind of band they want to be.  Part punk, part pop, part boy band, part fashion core, all heart.

A MORE NORTH show is like cold water down your pants.  Forget paying $15 before Ticketmaster charges.  Playing local More North Liveshows keeps costs down, and for most shows, you could download comp tickets from their site.  There is always a crowd of dedicated fans in attendance.  The kids that are there, really want to be there.  Don't get the idea that these guys are small potatoes, this is just not the case.  Sharing the stage with both Sugarcult and Bayside, they can roll with the biggest of dawgs.  They even headlined over Hidden in Plain View at one Metro performance.

They only have one child.  I mean, one CD.  It's available at any of their shows.  Many EP's were burned and given away with purchase of merch.  Aw, that's so nice.  The only thing that I can really say is MORE NORTH is a good thing.  Great guys, great live show; they just make me feel fuzzy inside.  If you don't know, you better ask somebody who does...
