MzSi started out with Ben Guyton's passion for music. The Columbus, Ohio teenager had been swayed by his love for guitar-driven rock to take up the instrument and form a band. After several failed attempts with some less-committed friends, Ben decided to see if he could get something together with his drum-playing best friend, Chris Feick.
Chris was already an accomplished musician, with years of classical piano and singing under his belt. They both loved rock music and had similar tastes. Chris, however, didn't have a drumset of his own. He had taken lessons from his grandmother and had sat behind the kit at her house at every chance he got, but owned only one little snare drum. The pair decided this was a problem.
So, this incarnation of Ben's band didn't go anywhere for the time being.
About the time this band was going nowhere, Ben realized he had never formally broken off his previous "band", which existed only in various people's minds, as it was made up of him and three kids who had yet to pick up the instruments they "played". Ben had hired his friend Rob to sing. Neither of them is quite sure how this happened since it was pretty much the result of Ben issuing a challenge to Rob after Rob snickered at the idea that Ben would sing for a band (actually Rob asked about what the band was doing because he thought he still played keyboard for it yet hadn't heard Ben mention it for a year). Well, anyways, this odd pair started messing around with Rob's acoustic guitar and cassette player every day after school. Rob would hit a few chords on the guitar while Ben freestyle rapped into the mic of the cassette player. The songs were absolutely amazing (sarcasm) and focused around deep concepts like the fact that Ben would cry if he had a girlfriend that fell in love with a 40-year-old balding fat man, that the kid who lived down the street was a midget who he would leave in a ditch if he was thrown there by a car, and that Ben liked to play basketball. These tapes were eventually destroyed due to their extreme suckiness. After three days of this, Rob got out a $60 Synsonics!!! junior drum set that he got for a Christmas present when he was in third grade. Although it was rusted, falling apart and had a disgusting amount of cat urine on it, he set it up in his room and told Ben to have Chris over today, too. Chris joined in their jamming. Eventually, the band came out of their acoustic rap-metal shell (no, I'm not being serious here) and started doing cover songs. As Rob's guitar playing progressed, he found he liked to write songs. He developed a better rock singing voice. The band liked Rob's new songs. Band practice became something to look forward to every day. Everyone got better at their instruments.
The band went through several basssits and name changes, finally settling on the name MzSi (formerly standing for Mazarin Sinkhole -- you're allowed to laugh) and rotating between a few fill-in bassists in order to capitalize on the great chemistry between the three original members. They began to be a more exciting live band as everyone became more expressive stage performers. They beat out a couple big local acts in a battle of the bands, although they lost to a band of idiots who wore Abercrombie shirts and lip rings and thought they were punk and whose ignorant fans didn't even watch any other bands. Or maybe they won, since they got the first place prize. Okay, no one's really sure but it's not really important. The point is, MzSi has morphed into the geek rock band that it is today. And that's the best part. Muahaha.
